How old were your babies

What did you do if your babies outgrew their infant carriers on the early side and they were still a little wobbly? My husband and I like to go grocery shopping together with the babies - we each get one cart and one baby. I suppose I could just plop them in the stroller, but I wouldn't be as much help then.

Mine didn't really start sitting in the cart until about 9 months old and still they can only sit in the carts that have the seat belts or they try to stand up. I always had to bring the double stroller until then. I still have to bring the double stroller if I don't have a 2nd person to help me b/c they aren't sturdy enough and don't follow directions enough to have 1 baby in the front of the cart and 1 baby sitting in the basket - the baby in the basket wants to stand up.

Around 8 months they started sitting in the shopping cart, for awhile I would put them both in the same basket with one leg through the hole and the other bent in the seat. Then around 11 months they started getting too big for that, so we had to switch to the big obnoxious cart with the plastic car on it because those carts have 4 leg holes in the basket part. If DH and I happen to go out together (to Target or something) we just take 2 carts and put a baby in each one.

Aimee, check out your stores carts, most stores usually have something that will accomodate 2 babies, ours are the big obnoxious ones with the car in the front, there is room for 2 kids in the car and 2 more kids in the basket where there are 4 leg holes and 2 seatbelts.

Mine weren't really steady until 10-11 months, but I could still use the double sng so it wasn't a problem for us. In the beginning, I tucked blankets around them so they couldn't move much (since they seemed SO small).

I bring the double stroller still. DD isn't stable enough to be able to sit there yet. My grocery store has those plastic car carts too, but I wouldn't trust my two to stay put in there... is there any restraint in those? I can see them trying to crawl out...

There are restraints in them (the ones that aren't broken), but I didn't start using those until my girls were about 16-17 months old.

In those ones with the plastic cars the basket of the cart (the top part where babies usually sit) have a space for 2 babies, 2 seatbelts and 4 legholes. I wouldn't trust my kids down in the car part either but they fit great in the top part.

my grocery store has the wider carts that accomadate two kids. I have been putting the girls in the cart since they were 7.5 months old. There are buckles to keep them in place.

Ours were 8 months before they could sit up in a shopping cart while being buckled in.

    This is so sad.

I have never tried! I either go with one other person or I only take one and DH watches the other. Either way we rarely go out to stores.

I hope my children don't have social issues because of this :)

I just wanted to chime in that I had real issues with grocery shopping by myself - I just couldn't fit anything in the snap and go and couldn't push a cart and a stroller and so I started carrying one baby in the baby bjorn and the other I put the carrier on the front of a regular cart and it made my life a whole lot easier at the grocery store, target, you name it. I will probably continue with the bjorn and get a single umbrella stroller for quick outings.

Ours love to sit in the shopping cart - it's one of their favorite treats along with sitting in a highchair. They started at about 6 1/2 months but they had been sitting really well on their own and even crawling on all 4's before then so they had really good trunk control. I still drive slowly and keep an eye on them.

The biggest problem we have is that one of them tries to stand up (but that's not cart related - just him... ).

Before they were stable we kept them in their carseats in the SNG or in the other stoller. It is much easier to put them in the cart though and they seem to enjoy it much more.

We started towards the end of 9 months I think. We would take the double stroller before I was comfortable with that. I still take the double stroller if I'm alone (unless they have the carts for two, but only one place here does). If DH is with us we take two carts in. The boys LOVE it when they are in two carts. I'll take one and go off to get something and when you get them back together they smile and grin like they've been separated for hours :)

I'm going to have to check out the car carts - It never occurred to me that the basket itself would be different! Thanks!

Maybe I'll consider trying in the next month or so. It's one of those things where I don't want to experiment in public with everyone watching!

Ok, to complicate the issue, what if you're a germophobe? I've seen those covers, are they washable? Probably not the most convenient when lugging in two babies and a diaper bag already...

Another question for those of you that said they both ride in the same cart. How do you carry them both into the store? I've never been able to carry both at the same time, and then once I got in the store I'm not sure how I'd be able to grab a cart! I guess for solo shopping trips, I'll have to keep using a stroller and dragging a cart which draws tons of unwanted attention!

The germaphobe in me wipes the cart down with a sanitizing wipe before the baby gets in and then a baby wipe once they get out when we are done. I keep a tub of sanitizing wipes in my car at all times, they have come in handy more than once for gross bathrooms, spills, etc. I have never used the shopping cart cover, IMO just something else to buy and lug around.

And usually I scope out the parking lot for a double seater cart in the cart return outside the store, I have never NOT found one. Then I just park near there, grab the cart and load the babies in before I head into the store, that may get a little trickier in the winter weather, but if it's really snowy and nasty I probably won't take the babies out anywa.

When I went grocery shopping with my twins I would set them in the basket (up) facing each other with a blanket so they'd be comfortable and not have the cart directly on their backs. It worked well.

Ours were 7-8 months before they would sit up well in a shopping cart.

I did this when ours were really small - DD went in the carrier and DS went in the front pack cuz he had better head control earlier...

I tried with DS when he was around 6 or so mos old - I would buckle him in and prop him up with my purse

I have just started putting DD in the front of the cart. I have a cart seat cover with a belt and toys and she loves it! She isn't too wobbly and can sit up well. DS is still unable to sit up so I don't feel comfortable putting him in there. I have him in the front carrier and he just loves looking around. It surely makes shopping a lot easier because I am short and it was hard for me to see over the car seat on the cart. :D
