How Much Spit Up is Too Much Spit Up?

I guess from a laundry standpoint any spitup is too much. lol

My girls started with Similac Advance at birth and did fine.

Around 4 weeks they started spitting up after they ate. One would scream and seem uncomfortable immediately after eating.

Around 5 weeks it progressed to projectile vomiting from both girls 1-2 times a day. Also, it seemed like we were dealing with colic as both were super fussy from 7-10.

I had a free sample of soy formula so I tried that. It took 2 days for either to poop. The spit up situation has improved, but it is still an issue.

Sometimes it will all come out an hour or more after eating.

I do have an appt w/ the pedi next week, but was curious what your experiences were.

    Thanks in advance!

After a couple of months on Enfamil Lipil I became concerned about my girls too. I think that if they are projectile vomiting then that is a definite indicator of needing to switch formulas or be checked for reflux. Mine were not projectile spitting up, it was more like after a feeding it would drool out of their mouths. I switched them to Enfamil AR (per the pedi's suggestion) and that put an end to it!

I agree it sounds like reflux and your LO's are uncomfortable. You might want to talk to your ped about thickening their bottles. This helps to keep the formula down. If you do,use Beechnut rice or oatmeal cereal. Gerber's has soy in it and some babies do not tolerate it well. To thicken formula start by doing 1 tsp per oz and go up from there until the formula stays in their little tummies. You will probably have to change to a faster nipple.

Our babies were fine until about 3 weeks old and then it was spit up all the time!! We even went to the Pediatric ER because we thought one baby was projectile vomiting and something was wrong with his stomach. Our ped. put us on Enfamil AR, but we got the Target brand. Hope they feel better!

I agree that the projectile vomiting is something that needs to be checked by your doctor. It sounds like it could be reflux.

I agree with Lisa, and I would definitely speak with your ped. Also, some babies that have issues with milk-based formulas, also have issues with soy. We used 2.5tsp per oz for thickening bottles with rice cereal.

We had that problem with Jake but it didn't happen until about 3 months. He wasn't gaining weight b/c of it. We started adding rice cereal (to the reg Similac) and it worked instantly! It was an easy solution. I hope it turns out as well for you!

We had (still have at times) projectile vomiting. I changed formulas from similac to Costco and I changed to slow flow bottles (the playtex nursers). Both changes seem to help. We now only get projectile vomiting if they are fed too often.

We had the same problem with our boys. The hospital started us off with Similac Advance we didn't have too much problem with spitting up initially but I think it was because they weren't really taking too much. Later on they were spitting up a lot, including the occasional projectile spit up. One of the boys had the very painful gas from it as well. My cousin suggested we switch to Good Start because she and her friends all found that Similac caused more spit ups. After switching over to Good Start the spit up seem to have decreased significantly....of course not completely! Also, for my little one with the painful gas I started using Playtex Advance bottles to help with the air, I'm not sure whether it was the bottle or the formula or maybe both that helped. Our boys are four months now but they still spit up a bit after they eat but a lot less then when they were little. So, don't worry it will get better! But of course check with your Ped. to rule out any significant problems.

    Good luck!
