How much solids do you 8-9 month olds eat?

I think my kids eat more solids than most. They hate formula these days and only want real food. I have decided to cut back on their solids to ensure they are staying hydrated and getting enough formula.

How much do your twins eat in a sitting? If we use jarred food, they eat at least 8oz. each. If I use cubes, they use about 8 of those each as well. It seems insane!

    TIA

Mine each eat about 4 oz. of puree, mixed with two tablespoons of baby cereal to thicken it, for breakfast and dinner. Then, we do a little bit of afternoon snack like cheerios or shredded cheese, or maybe a little yogurt. They both drink about 24 to 26 oz. of EBM/formula a day.

I have no idea whether this is a lot or little? I'm thinking it's about average....

    Hi Tammy -

I swear I think mine eat way more too, but they aren't overweight and they aren't "sick" afterwards. Thankfully, they are still taking in at least 20-28 oz a day of formula.

Anyways, we are almost exclusively on table food, but here's a sample of what they ate yesterday (and finished it all):

Breakfast: Shared nutri grain waffle, shared container of Motts Natural applesauce, shared bannana roled in crushed Cheerios

Lunch: Shared piece of whold grain bread with 4 slices of deli turkey and one slice of American cheese, approx 20 blueberries each, shared container of no sugar added pear slices

Dinner: Each tackled a Piece of sliced ham and (all are approx) 1/4 cup peas, 1/4 cup scalloped corn, 1/4 cup cheesy hashbrowns....hmmm, there might have been even more here - plus a bit of carrot cake (minus the frosting) for dessert!

I swear if I would have kept on giving them food - they would have kept on eating! Mine haven't met a food they don't like yet. I will say that table foods and self feeding has been one of the best milestones yet. It makes mealtime so much easier.

I don't know if any of this helped, but have you tried doing bottles before solids to make sure they are getting enough that way?

    Good Luck!

WOW! We dont do bottles at mealtime at all. We do solids and bottles at totally different time. :) Compared to that, mine eat very little. :)

    Tammy,

My girls have really small appetites for both solid food and formula. They average about 28 ounces of formula a day and 2 oz of food twice a day. Several of my friends had the same problem you do... they started solid food pretty early and by eight months their kids wanted nothing to do with the bottle. I know my pediatrician says to make sure that each baby gets at least 24 ounces of formula a day until a year old. Any solid food on top of that is good so long as it doesn't interfere with the formula intake.

Formula generally has 20 calories per ounce and solid food has 15 calories per ounce (I read this somewhere but not sure where). So you can figure that 8 ounces of solid food is the caloric equivelent to 6 ounces of formula. Typical baby solid food doesn't have the nutrients, fat or protein of formula of course, but that at least will tell you how many calories they're getting.

Good luck... I can't wait until my girls are as excited about solid food as yours are!

LOL - Elizabeth has never had 24oz. of formula. A good day is about 20 for her and now both take less than 20. Thomas used to drink 32 and now only 20ish. It is insane. The PED is not concerned in the least. He is about 23 pounds now and her 20 so it is not like they are small.

Even when I cut solids out, they dont drink.

    I HATE REFLUX!

    Tammy...

Sounds like you're doing a great job with your kids. I guess if they like solid food and not formula, then you just have to go with it! You might want to see if there's a website out there detailing how much fat, protein, and nutrients toddlers need. That would help you plan out solid food meals so that you make sure your kids are getting everything they need.

My beebs take 4 bottles a day...and they are really fluctuating on how much they drink at a sitting. Sometimes they drink 9 ounces and other times 2-4. It is so varied. In the end, they tend to drink around 25 ounces a day...some days as much as 32 and a few rare days they drink 20-22 ounces, but that is not often.

They are getting baby food for breakfast and lunch. In the mornings I tend to give them a baby food fruit (an 8 ounce container that they split) and some yogurt. In the afternoons they get a veggie (an 8 ounce container that they split) and rice cereal or oatmeal. Dinner time they have been getting some bites of our food, but this week I am going to start increasing what they get at this meal. I think we are very close to going to 3 bottles a day. They also get cheerios or puffs to pick at during all of their meals.

It's crazy isn't it? I told my DH I was going to ask the Dr if they really will self regulate because they just LOVE to eat so much. Henry shoves in food by the fistfuls, and Ellie sings with joy from the time she starts until she ends! Henry is 22lbs and Ellie is 18lbs, and they are both in the 80-90% for height. I definetly think that mobility has increased their appetites, and as an added bonus their naps have improved too. Anyways, When we were just doing purees, they split between 3-4 containers of food at each meal, but as soon as we moved to table foods it was like some monsters were unleashed!

We do bottles at 7:30, 12:30 and 6:00 and meals around 8:00, 11:30 and 5:30. No real pattern for us either - they are all somewhat close to the meal.

Good Luck - it sounds like your babies are thriving, so just keep up what you are doing!! Reflux is horrible - we were just able to ween Ellie from her Prevacid last month, and it was such a relief!
