I'm weaning my bf babies at 18 mos. (still nursing them 1x before bed) and my pedi said they need about 16 oz. a day of whole milk. They hate the taste and the only way I can get them to drink it is to blend in a banana. Just wondering how much milk other 18 month olds are getting? Thanks!

MIne aren't quite that old, but my pedi says 16 oz, though they typically drink up to 24 oz on their own. Remember, it doesn't have to be milk- it can be yogurt (or smoothies), cheese, or other dairy products they (*see post below- my first try at this didn't print the word "eat"). Then you can fill the rest of the fluid requirements with water or other drinks they like (though juice is not an option at my house).

Mine are coming up on 15 months, but they get 16-22 ounces of milk a day and that won't change for a long while, per the pedi.

I also give them water and half water/half juice, especially since it's been so hot.

Mine drink 12 to 16 ounces a day ... babycenter.com says 2 to 3 servings a day and one serving is 4 ounces.

At 18 months mine were doing anywhere from 12 to 18 ounces of milk a day and they are still taking that much. I think they are closer to the lower end now but have always eaten various cheeses and yogurt throughout the day.

 Sorry, I just have to laugh at the crazy contradictions that come up on threads about pedi's recommendations. Our children should be off bottles by 12 months, but you still have to manage to somehow get 16 oz. of milk into them at 18 months. It's a little silly.

I think that whatever you can get into them by serving smoothies is great. They're still getting great nutrition from your before bed BF'ing and if they're getting calcium from cheese and yogurt, you should be more than covered. :D

At 16 months mine are drinking about 12-16 oz. from sippy cups a day. They get milk in a sippy at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and bedtime.

Our pedi told me no more than 16 oz. of milk a day, so that they eat a well balanced diet, it won't fill them up then (the milk that is).

MIne weren't drinking 8 ounces- no matter what I tried. I just make sure they are well hydrated other ways- give them yogurt (2 servings of that a day), make pudding with whole milk and half and half (mine are underweight for adjusted age), etc. I think they do well getting their calcium. Babies need a small amount of protein a day compared to adults. Babies need lots of fat- for brain cell development- good fats though- like those found in milk, or avocados, etc.

Not 18 months yet, but my 16 monthers drink 16-20 ounces of milk a day.

When we weaned from BFing at 13.5 months, mine weren't too keen on it at first either but quickly caught on.

I would say mix other dairy into their diet to make up the difference. I would still try to offer plain whole milk in hopes that they will like it one day.

BTW-Great job nursing so long! :good:

Mine drink maybe 10-12 oz a day, but they also eat lots of dairy. They get yogurt for breakfast almost every day and have cheese usually at a meal or snack. Our doctor also says not to have them fill up on milk so that they will eat.
