How much do you make your 3 year olds clean up?

So, how tough are you on clean up? Obviously it's faster if we do it, but we are working with them on clean up.

right now they almost always put their dirty clothes in the hamper and their milk cups in the sink. They usually clean up one or two things in the playroom (put all the cars in a bucket, or clean up the big trucks). But by no means do they clean up the whole playroom and we don't make them do it every night, it just depends on the day.

    So what do you do?

My girls are responsible for dishes in the sink, dirty clothes in the basket, and picking up toys at night or whenever we need to do it throughout the day. All their toys are in our living/dining area because we don't have a playroom so we do pickup nightly. They can pickup absolutely everything by themselves and will do so if I ask, but about half the time I help them just to speed it up.

I started singing the clean up song to them as I picked up toys as soon as they could walk. Soon after, as soon as I started the song, they would both start helping me clean up so we have expected it for a while. I have to say they really do a great job and they love to help clean, pickup, organize, whatever it is I'm doing around the house.

I did the same as Michelle with the clean up song. :good:

Mine are responsible for putting their dirty clothes in the hamper, cleaning up their rooms, putting dirty dishes next to sink (in the sink was just too loud  ) and cleaning up their playroom. It does take them longer but I just start them earlier. ;) I used to start them like ten minutes before say dinner, now I give them a 1/2 hour and they do it all on their own. They are also responsible for washing and drying their own clothes. (Not really, I wish!)

Mine put their clothes in the hamper and they pick up all their toys. One is much better at the toy thing than the other one, she likes things to be organized. They also make their beds.

My girls put their dishes in the sink, clean up their room, and put their clothes in the hamper. We usually clean up their room every night before bedtime, but if its really late or they are extremely tired, then I will let it go until the next day.

Mine always put their dirty cups/dishes in the sink, clothes in the hamper, picked up their toy room and made their bed. I guess since I did all of the stuff they followed suit. My 2 year old takes wipes out of the box and goes around wiping everything down. My friend told me I evidentially clean way to much since my 2 year old picks up on it.

Around age 3 we started having them clean up all their toys at night before bed. We sometimes have a loose definition of "clean" (i.e., things just have to be off the floor, but not necessarily in their proper places), but in general we try to enforce it.

We also have a general rule that if they have made a big mess with some particular thing, that mess needs to be cleaned up before they can start another messy project (i.e., dress-up clothes go back in the closet before they bring out the Playmobil set with 10 million tiny pieces).

However, they hardly ever clean up independently. We have to help them (meaning we do about 1/3 of the work) and cajole or browbeat them through the entire thing. Every once in a while they will clean up by themselves after we remind them several times, but they essentially never do it without being reminded.

They do put their dirty clothes and PJs in the hamper -- about half the time unprompted, half the time with prompting.

I don't want them dealing with their own dirty dishes; I'm too afraid something will break or they'll drop half-eaten food all over the floor.

    It's a process.

Mine put their dishes in the sink and clean up a bit of their toys. Usually I just do it myself after they go to bed :pardon:

mine will put their dirty clothes in the hamper - put their clean clothes away once I fold them and will pick up their toys, put their dishes in the sink and their paper plates in the trash...they will also stand in front of the open dryer door (I have a flip down door) and I put the wet clothes on the door and they push them into the dryer...Ian will also try to "help" Tony vacuum.

Mine will help load/unload the dishwasher, bring me their clothes from their hampers, clean the playroom, make their beds and put their dirty clothes in the hamper. I have caught them "TRYING" to clean their bathroom, but told them to let momma do it since their way had water EVERYWHERE! :)
