It varies widely by child. Our boys had no words - not mommy, daddy, ball - until 22 months. If yours already have 2 words at 12 months, they are on the right track.

My girls are 14 months. Josie says hi, mama, dada, done, that, sissy and kitty. Bella says mama, dada, "what's that", juice, sissy and cup. So 7 for one and 6 for the other.

Mine barely got credit for "mama and dada" at 12 mos. and now at 2 they have OODLES of words!! Probably too early to tell, but they are sounding right on track!

I am always wondering about our boys' speech also, they will be 2 in a few weeks but we only have about 8 words each. I can tell they can understand what we tell them they just speak in this "speech" that we can't understand...they seem to understand each other though. Does anybody else have that? We read to them all the time and talk to them, ask them questions I think they are fine though. Just wondering if anybody else has the "twin talk"???

At 12 months they jsut need to have sounds ma, ba, la, da more so than actual words. Mine did have about 10 words at 12 months and at 18 months I can't even count how many words they have but they are ahead according to their pedi.

My twins were 34 weekers. They are 21+ months and they only have about 5-10 clear words each. They have speech therapy but I am not overly concerned.....

Mine had maybe 3 words at 12 months. They both really had a speech explosion at 18 months. I actually had scheduled a speech eval for them, but in between scheduling it and actually having the eval, they took off and it really wasn't necessary. If you aren't already, start signing with them. Mine often know the sign for a word before they can speak it. Also, it helps understand what they are talking about. They still don't speak all that clearly, a lot of words are "buh" or "sah", but with the sign, I know what they are trying to say.

Mine are 12 months adjusted and they say "bye" and "Uh-oh" so I hope we are both on track!

I'd say at 12 months they had hi, bye, mama, dada, and Grace had good. But in the last month they've added a boatload of words to their repertoire. I wouldn't worry - they sound on track!

Mine have dada, mama, dai (russian "give") and Sophia just learned to say "Adia" which is Andrea - our housekeeper-babysitter . I'm not concerned yet. They are growing in the bilingual environment, it always delays speech as it's more confusing for the children.

Yikes, we're 12 months old on Wednesday, 11 months adjusted. I'm like Diane on this one. DS says mama/dada but I think it's the normal babble more than real associations with us. He makes funny grunts with cat and dog. When the animals come into the room, I say "cat". Both kids look at me and DS makes a consistent grunt noise. DD shrieks at them.

Mine really had no words at 12 months, but were babbling up a storm. They barely got credit for having 6-12 words at their 18 month checkup, but literally within a month of it they already had 30 words. I stopped keeping track at around 200 words many, many months ago. So yeah, there was definitely an 18-month explosion at our house!

Our twins had very few words at 2 years. They knew tons of words but didn't speak. They were a little over two before their speech took off. We did get them a speech therapist for awhile and that seemed to help, too. My boys "spoke" to each other in their own language but it was more a lot of sounds and laughing but believe me they knew what each other was saying. It was hilarious!!!!!!! Now at almost 5 they never shut up but they still finish each other's sentences and know what the other is thinking. It's really something!

Ours say 'hey' and 'up' clearly - will intermitently use mama, dada, baba, say buh for bye, and gee for their gram. They're 10 1/2 months adjusted... like pp said, it depends on the baby - sounds like yours are definitely on the right track.
