How many "words" do your babies know?

My twins are 11 months old - soon I will be moving on to the Age 1-5 board :)

So far my babies make a lot of sounds, laughs, squeals. They can say "mama" "dada" "baba" "papa"
That's about it. They were 6 weeks premature, if that make a difference (?)

Should they be saying other words yet? I know they're still babies, but someone asked me today if they were saying any other words, and it got me thinking.

I talk to them all day, and explain what I'm doing while feeding, changing, etc. So they are hearing me verbalize.
Just curious what other babies their age are doing.

    Thanks all!

James says Hi, Mama, ba-ba (bottle), and bla-bla (binky). Sean says Mama. I don't actually know how many words the "average" baby knows.

Liberty is my talker she says mama, dada, papa, grandma, dog, bye bye, and she said drink for the first time today. Now Leighanna on the other hand only says dada, everything is dada. :)

What a great post idea! Mine are at totally different places in the whole talking thing. Isabel is so talkative! She says ma-ma and da-da, up, hi, hey!, and when we play peek-a-boo she'll yell out "boo!" to me. Elizabeth "talks" a lot, but she's not using words other than ma-ma and da-da.

Goodness I feel like mine are way behind!!! We talk to them constantly but, my Jacob is just now making ma sounds. Noah just squeals and laughs. I guess it is all in their own time.

I sure do hope there is no set amount because my two are still in the mamamama, bababa, dadada, tatata stages! They sort of say "hi" but it's more like haaa :p

My daughter didn't say a single word -- barely babbled at all -- until age 1, when she started saying, "uh-oh." And, that was it -- seriously, not a single other word, until almost 20 months! She didn't even say mama and dada until close to 2.

We used sign language a lot, and thankfully she signed quite a bit....

Now, at 3 and 3 months, she talks in full sentences, non-stop, all day long.

Kids are so funny! (And my DH's aunt, who is a pediatric nurse, keeps saying, "Remember when you were worried about her not talking?" LOL)

Ava says dada (her favorite), mama, baba, hi and Evan says mama (his favorite), dada, yahyah, baba, gaga. I can't believe they haven't said dog yet since they are fascinated with ours and chase them around all day!! :D
