How many ultrasounds did you have?

    Hi everyone,
I am new to the forum. I'm so glad I found it.

My twins are 9 1/2 months old. Sometimes I feel like this is the first opportunity I've had to get on a computer since they were born. Thomas and Julianne were born in September 2006 at 37 weeks. They were 5lbs. 8oz., and 6lbs. 4oz., respectively.

Aside from reflux, both have been healthy. However, both are a little slow to crawl, scoot and even roll around. They are interactive with people, smile and laugh. But I'm wondering if some of their gross motor skill delays could have something to do with the number of ultrasounds I had during my pregnancy. I probably had about 10 ultrasounds. How many did everyone else have? Do you feel as though the ultrasounds have had any effect on your babies?

Looking forward to getting to know everyone...

    Thank you,
    Amanda

Welcome. I wouldn't be too worried. My oldest was 9 days late and didn't crawl until 10 1/2 months. She did roll all over the place from 7-8 months onwards though.

Anyway, I think there is absolutely no scientific evidence between the number of u/s and gross motor skills. Some kids are slower than other, my kids are not extremely fast either and all born full term and healthy.

But to answer your question ... 1 at 6w4d (when we found out), 1 at 12w (nuchal fold), 1 at 17 week (check at L&D), 20w u/s and then 26/30/34 weeks (growth). So 7 in total.

Talk to your doc if you are really concerned, but I am sure they'll be fine. Just make sure they get plenty of time on the floor ... challenge them a little, help them, etc.

Mine were born at 37 weeks, plus 4 days. They will be 3 months on Monday. So far, I don't see any delays in their development at all! They are scooting all over the place when they are on their tummies and Cary rolls from front to back and almost has mastered back to front. It won't be long before Samuel is doing the same...they are both extremely active.
In answer to your question. I had the first u/s at 8 weeks and monthly until week 32. (Also had three others because I had a cerclage placed and they had to check on them before and after to make sure they were okay!) From week 32 on, I had two per week (BPP's), so a total of 20! I don't think they did any harm at all as far as I can tell.
I know all babies are different. I would ask the ped if you are concerned about their development.
I am new to TS, too. I am so glad I found it! Welcome:)

Man, I never counted but it had to be a bunch! Counting BPP's and the quickies at the OB's, I'm sure it was around 20. I had never considered this an issue, and still don't, although I would have to say my babes might be on the slower end of developmental milestones, but they were also 5 weeks early.... Every baby develops on their own schedule..I wouldn't worry about it too much unless your pedi is.

    HI!!! :sign0016:
I had too many to count and I do not feel like it caused any problems here!!

Interesting question...never thought of it before. But I think we had 5 u/s and the girls were born at 35 wks exactally. Now at 4mnths are almost completely caught up and Alyssa is even rolling from tummy to back and yesterday almost made if from back to tummy!! Ashley could care less to even try!! She however is extremely social...so I dont think either is behind at all and they have a good 5 wk span to work with (because they were 5 wks early...sorry didnt know if that made sense!)

    Welcome to TS. :)

I have never really thought about the effects of ultrasounds on children. But I wouldn't worry at this point. Mine did not start crawling until 9 1/2 months and then the normal range for walking is like 9 months to 19 months or there abouts.

As for ultrasounds I had about 6. Pretty much every 8 weeks. I think they were at the following times during my pregnancy:
    7 weeks
    9 weeks
    18 weeks
    26 weeks
    34 weeks
    36 weeks

I ended up delivering at 36 weeks 1 day.

With my son I had an u/s every 2 weeks starting at 14 weeks, had one to date the pregnancy as well: altogether I guess it was about 15 since I was hospitalized at 30 weeks with preterm labor. He started backwards crawling and just learned to go forward at around 8 3/4 months old. He seems to do several things in a weekend (crawl forward, sit from laying, stand from laying.

So far with the twins I have had 5 in the first 19 weeks. I will have another level 2 in 2 weeks and then will have growth scans every peri appt until I deliver

Welcome to TS! Congratulations on your babies! I am glad that you found us!

I had more than 10, not sure of the exact amount. But no problems here either. Have you asked your ped about your concerns?

I encourage you to join our Big Sister program. We will match you with another mom of twins that will provide support and friendship through your journey with twins! Click on the link at the bottom of my signature for more info. It is a great program!

I had one every two weeks, so I had about 15-20, not counting a few I had that weren't scheduled. My guys did their milestones on time.

I've had way to many U/S to count. I had one at every appt to find the heart beats and I had a big one every month for weights.

Hi and welcome! I had at least 8 or so and never even thought about that connection.

My girls are about 2 weeks younger than yours and aren't crawling/cruising/walking. I brought it up to the pedi at their 9 mo. appt. who said that he isn't concerned, some babies are naturally delayed. It does bother me that all the other twins in playgroup were doing it by this point although I know everyone says allllll the time not to compare, it's hard not to. My girls did not roll or sit up in the normal timeframe either. They have been on target or ahead with all of their other development though. I guess we're in the same boat.

I would definitely call your pedi if you're concerned. Good luck!

Oh, by the way, my girls were born 37 weeks 2 days.

I had lots and lots of ultrasounds and loved seeing my babies each time. Some milestones they met early and some later. I try not to get too concerned since children do develop differently. I've seen that the most in my two.

I had ultra sounds every two weeks plus NST's twice a week for 2 months. I think my guys are pretty much on their marks for developmental milestones.

Welcome to TS! Your kiddos are darling!

In answer to your question, we had a gajillion ultrasounds. At least one a week since 25 wks. I had nearly as many with my first, and she is in perfect health and a genius! ;)

I had 4 U/S. One at 12 weeks, one at 19 weeks ,one at 24 week and one at 28 weeks. I was due to go for my 32 week scan the day i had them. Mine didnt really sit up unassisted untill 8 months and didnt start crawling ds 10 months and dd 11 months. So i wouldnt worry to much as each baby develops at their own rate x

    Congratulations and welcome to Twinstuff.

I had 10 u/s plus some while I was in the hospital with PTL. I don't recall how many I had while there but probably 2 bringing me up to 12.

Do you mind if I ask when your children have achieved these skills? It is had to say if in our opinion there is a delay without knowing where they are at in terms of the motor skills listed.

I personally don't see any connection between the number of u/s and their development. Each of my babies had the same number, obviously, but they have developed their motor skills at completely different times. Sometimes they were months different from each other.

I can honestly say I have no idea how many I had. Probably somewhere around 25. I had the first @ 6-7 weeks because of spotting. I kept having issues with spotting/bleeding and each time, had an US. The there were possible heart and kidney(ureter) issues with one of the girls. I honestly felt like it was one a week. My girls are 9 months, rolling all over the place, starting to crawl and pull up. Their both going at their own pace, one does something before the other and then vice a versa. The Dr. said all babies do things at their own pace. My son walked at 10 months, but wouldn't talk till 2 1/2 (I had a lot of US with him because of spotting and we were in a car accident). My neice didn't walk till 15 months and talked incessantly before she was 2. Each child is different. Try not to worry - before you know it you'll wish they'd stay in one place!

I had, oh I'd say, around 25 U/S's while PG. One of my girls met milestones on track or early for her actual age, the other one is slower. I don't think U/S's are the culprit.

Welcome to TS. I had an u/s at every visit and I only made it to 25 weeks, but I probably had at least 15 u/s. Even though both my babies are preemies they have hit all the major milestones when they should have, so it did not affect them.

We had probably 25 - 30 ultrasounds. At 12 weeks, they thought there was an issue with one of the twins, so a number of them were the level 2 ultrasound version, where they can see everything about the babies and do specialized measurements. Our girls are 10 1/2 months old, and doing fine. One talks more, one moves (almost walking) more. One holds her bottle by herself, and one loves finger food. The're just different people already. We went until 39 weeks, and had a scheduled C-section. The babies got too big too fast to turn, and I was out of room. They were 7 pounds, 6 ounces, and 6 pounds, 8 ounces.

If it helps, there was a great article in Parents magazine a couple of months ago that talked about what is normal at 10 months, and the kids were all over the map. (and all the posts about talking to the ped. are right if you have any worries at all).

Beginning at 6 weeks, we had one US every 2 weeks until I gave birth at 30 weeks. I don't think they contributed to anything.
