How many of you don't see a peri?

I asked my OB at my last appointment and she said that there is no reason for me to see a peri. She said they are going to start doing an u/s each month and unless they see something of concern there is no need for me to see one. I was shocked because EVERYONE had told me I would start seeing one in the 3rd trimester, even my sister-in-law that had healthy twin girls a few years ago said she started seeing a peri her 3rd trimester. I don't know if I should take it to mean that my doctor feels like she is experienced enough with twins that there is no need for a peri, or if she is not being cautious enough. So who else does not see a peri and is not planning on seeing one? Or who delivered healthy twins without having ever seen a peri? It makes me nervous, I haven't had a real u/s since the 7 week appointment. They quickly do one each visit to check heartbeats, and I went to a place where I paid for them to tell me the sexes, but have not had an u/s to check for the health of the babies since I was 7 weeks.

I saw one but only a few times. I felt Ishould have seen them more but b/c my pregnancy has been uneventful it was determined unnecessary for more visits. I worried a lot about this so what my suggestion would be is if you are going to feel like you aren't getting enough care or the twins aren't being watched closely enough, demand it or switch doctors. Good luck and hopefully you won't even need the peri!

I haven't, and I assume I won't. My OB had no concerns, as of my visit this morning, but I do have an u/s at every visit and will be having my second hospital u/s in three weeks (they check all the major things like lung and brain development, it's more detailed).

I had an u/s at 10 weeks just because I have had a missed miscarriage before. THen my nexy u/s was at 18 weeks. Then at 27 weeks. I had one at 30 weeks due to PTL at the hospital. I have no idea when I will get my next one.

As for the peri. I have not seen one and my doctor has never mentioned me needing to.

I didn't find out that it was twins until 18 weeks at an ultrasound after my AFP was not normal. Then my doctor retired and I had to find a new OB. When I started seeing her I was probably about 24 weeks. She sent me for ultrasound every 3 - 4 weeks. I never saw a peri. My girls were born healthy at 35 wks 5 days.

I started seeing one right from the beginning and everyone I know IRL has seen one and a regular OB as well and has gone from the beginning as well. I really liked going to the peri because I felt like they were very knowledgeable and knew what to expect with twins and high risk pregnancies in general, that is their specialty. It made me feel better going to someone who does it all the time. I got a growth u/s with them at every visit, so that was nice.

You don't need your OB's permission to go, you can just go, depending on how your insurance does it. If it makes you feel more comfortable then go see one. Your OB will deliver the baby though, not the peri.

I never saw one - I had a very uneventful twin pregnancy. I was glad - I hated going to doctor's appointments and the last thing I wanted was more - though I do remember wondering why others were going and not me.

I saw my OB at first, a group, where everyone kept reassuring me they dealt with lots of twin pregnancies. But somehow they kept forgetting I was even pregnant, let alone with twins. Had a mommy instinct that I needed to switch to a peri and did so at 13 weeks. At my second appointment, they measured my cervix, found it dramatically short, and saved my pregnancy with an emergency cerclage.

I highly recommend seeing a peri, even if you have the most normal, uneventful twin pregnancy in the whole world. They are specialists in high risk pregnancies, which a twin pregnancy can turn into quickly.

Is your OB doing a transvaginal U/S regularly (like every 2 weeks) to check your cervix length? This is a biggie, and you are in the prime time that should be being done.

No, they checked me at 7 weeks but haven't checked since.

My first appt with the peri is the 26. If I remember correctly you are in Baton Rouge? In monroe, we don't have any Peri's so the Peri's come from Baton Rouge once a week to check the high risk pregnancy's. If you want me to I can get the names and pass that along to you if you decide on your on to go see them. From what I have heard they arre great. A friend of mine gave birth to twins who had ttts, and that is who handled most of her pregnancy, once they found out it was TTTS. She loved them. Anyway let me know and I will pass along the info. to you.

I'm seeing a peri every 2 weeks because my babies are identical and sharing the same placenta. My sister only saw a peri with her twins because of "advanced maternal age" but continued to see her every month because one of her babies had a choroid plexus cyst on the brain. If there hadn't been any issues she would have only seen the peri that one time. Good luck!

I'll wait one more week, I see my OB again one week from today and I'm going to talk to her about it again and see why she says I don't need to go to one.

It really depends on what type of twins they think you may be carrying. If they even suspect that your twins could be mono/di then you should be getting biweekly u/s to watch for the small chance of TTTS. Getting a peri to look over the results would be good as well. If your twins are di/di then the chances of anything going wrong with your pregnancy isn't really related to carrying twins as much as it is just that there are now two babies to watch instead of one. The head peri at our hospital at Stanford said he doesn't even consider fraternals to be high risk in and of themselves. They watch di/di pregnacies as closely as any other pregnancy with a few extra considerations but they keep a very close watch on any suspected identicals.

I'm probably just worrying over nothing....either the doctor or the ultrasound tech has done an u/s every time I've gone to the doctor, and I'm sure if they thought they might be seeing anything that looked bad they would have sent me to a peri, they have looked at my babies every month.

    Hi,

I am scheduled to see the OB once every two weeks and am sent to the maternal fetal diagnostics center for an ultrasound every month. It's important to tell you that the OB does a quick "unofficial" ultrasound when I see her every two weeks to check heartbeats and see they each have enough fluid, etc.

I never saw a peri for my pregnancy. I delivered healthy, full term (38 wks) babies. If all is going well & as expected there isn't necessarily a reason for you to see one. If you are concerned though, ask your ob what her reasoning is. :)

I haven't seen a peri at all during this pregnancy. I have been on/off bedrest since 20wks d/t PTL. I saw the OB every 2 weeks from 20 wks until 28wks, then weekly. I was put on strict bedrest last week after 2 overnight stays for increased ctx. My BP has been good and the babies are growing wonderfully. I have been completely confident and comfortable with my OB. Besides, I would have to travel over 1hr one way to see a peri, so it doesn't break my heart not to have to do that. Hope all continues well for you. But like everyone else said, you have to do what makes you comfortable and secure in this pg.

I don't see a peri and my OB has not mentioned it and I haven't asked. I do get a level II sonogram every three to four weeks and it is a very detailed evalutation. In addition, my cervix is checked at each sonogram to make sure it is measuring properly. I feel good about this level of care but so far my pregnancy has been uneventful. In fact, my OB visits are very short because there isn't much to discuss.

My sister had twins and only had two sonograms during her entire pregnancy and she also never saw a peri. She also had an uneventful pregnancy.

Trust your instincts--if you don't think you are getting proper care or attention, say something.

I am not seeing one at all. My Dr told me that, since i am not having complications that i am not high-risk enough to see a peri. There is no point to it...

I don't see a peri and it has never been mentioned. I agree with a previous post where if they are in different placentas then the pregnancy is not usually considered high risk. I am comfortable with just seeing my ob every 4 weeks. I know at some point I will see her more frequently but I'm not sure when that happens.

I'm not seeing a peri either and won't unless something goes wrong. But I have had bi-weekly appts. since the 2nd trimester and monthly U/S (atleast) since the beginning of my pregnancy.

I saw one once around 20 weeks. The peri herself said that there was no reason for me to come back unless my OB saw a problem. She recommended growth u/s's every 3 weeks since the girls are sharing a placenta; but those were to be done in my OB's office and only referred to her if something looked off.

I have not seen a Peri and probably will not. My doctor does a quick U/S each visit to check the heartbeats and the babies positions. I have had u/s's at the hospital monthly to check growth since 20 weeks.

I never saw a Peri. I had a very good high risk dr at a teaching hospital and never thought I needed one.

I just see my OB. I see him every two weeks and he does an u/s and checks my cervix every time. Also every 4 -6 weeks he sends me to the radiologist for a detailed growth u/s. I asked at my first visit about a peri - he said that he has lots of experience with twin pregnancies, and that he consults with the peri (in the same building) every day about his patients, and that he would not hesitate to refer me or to bring in the peri if there was ever any issue or concern. So I felt comfortable with that.

I feel very comfortable that my OB does not treat a twin pregnancy like a 'normal' pregnancy - if he had acted like this was just an ordinary pregnancy, then I would have insisted on seeing someone else. He was clear from day 1 that he handles twin pregnancies differently, that I would see him more often, and he would be more cautious. He is always willing to spend as much time as we want to discuss things, answer any questions, and always reminds me to call him if I have any questions or concerns.

I saw a peri every 4 weeks and my OB every 4 weeks (so basically I had an appt every 2 weeks with someone) and a level II u/s once a month...I am high risk but I find it funny that they only ever checked my cervix once at 16 weeks....I never had cervical checks after that (probably cuz my damn cervix was at like 4.5 cm at 16 weeks and I didn't even dialate a fingertip after induction!)

Never. I had no problems conceiving. Had a very uneventful first pregnancy and my twin pregnancy was also very smooth. I continued to see my regular OB and she did not consider me high risk. I was induced at 38w2d and delivered 15 1/2 lbs of baby.

I am 33 weeks and I have never seen a peri. So far the pregnancy has been very uneventful and my OB has never even mentioned seeing a peri. I have had 3 ultrasounds so far and the next is scheduled for July 6th. I wouldn't be terribly concerned about it not being automatically suggested that you see one, but if you are concerned, but all means follow your gut instinct.

I don't see a peri either. During my first prenatal visit, I asked a bunch of questions as sort of a test to see how much my ob knew about handling a twin pregnancy. She passed with flying colors and I feel like I have been getting good care. I have had some bp issues, so I am going to see her every week, with a detailed growth u/s every 4 weeks at this point. She has also started checking my cervix every other week. I think it depends on your comfort level and confidence with the ob you are seeing. I have been through 3 years of infertility, so it was a biggie to me to have the best care possible (it's a biggie for everyone, but I guess my nerves are just shot after all we've been through).

I did not see a peri during my pregnancy. I was getting Level II ultrasounds at least every four weeks and peeks in between. I did not realize that they were checking my cervix when they were looking at the babies until I asked after reading about it here. They had been doing it the whole time. Perhaps they are checking and you are not aware that they are? Hopefully.

I hope so too. I talked to my mom about it last night, she has 25+ years of experience in labor and delivery. She said I'm being silly and should be glad that I dont have to see a peri. She knows my doctor a lot better than I do and assured me that I have nothing to worry about, and should be glad I'm having such a healthy twin pregnancy. She said that me wanting to see a peri would be like her wishing she had to see a brain surgeon. So that was very reassuring.

I never saw one and only had 2 u/s during my entire pregnancy. I had the most uneventful pregnancy possible. They were born at 36 weeks, 3 days, both over 6 pounds, perfectly healthy and ready to be released from the hospital before I was.

I'll only be seeing one a few times. My first appt with mine will be July 11th, after that I'll probably only see one once or twice (if needed).
