so, we got everything figured out and now things are messing up. they take their morning nap just fine, but refuse to take their second nap. I thought, well maybe they only need one nap so today i kept them up past their morning nap and put them to bed after lunch. i thought they would take a longer nap. NO! they only slept one hour. now they are sooooo cranky, so i am trying to get them back down, but they refuse to sleep. they are just crying and crying, but they are so cranky and tired.

any ideas on what to do???

    THANKS

We switched to one nap at 14 months. Most days I think they still could take two, but for schedule reasons, I have them on one. I would stick with 2 for right now, they might be going through a developmental growth spurt(walking, language).

I bet that's it! They are too excited to sleep! They want to work on their new skills!

I started putting my down for their second nap a bit earlier. Now, they take two naps at 9ish and 1:30ish. It has really worked out well. Before they were taking random naps, but by moving that second nap up, it has all fallen into place. Good luck.

We were on this schedule forever.

How long are they sleeping for the first nap? If they go down around 900, I would wake them around 1030/1100. If mine sleep too long in the morning, they fight the afternoon nap and have gone many times without it because they resist it. I used to put mine down around 2/230 but now place them in their cribs around 115/130 and amazing don't fight me. They fall asleep within 30 minutes and sleep between 1-1.5 hours.

At 11 months mine were still on 2 naps 9:30-11:30am and 1:30-3:15.

We switched to one nap at 17 months!

That's probably it. Mine were still on 2 naps at that time.
