How many naps a day for 4 month old twins?

Hi all. First posting and feel very new at this. I have two girls, Rilee and Addie. Crazy but true, they had been sleeping in their swings during the day for naps and in their car seats at night, in their cribs. We have been doing the Ferber method at night to work on getting them to sleep in their cribs. It has been five nights and it is working. They sleep in their cribs and are sleeping in less then thirty minutes. They used too sleep through the night but now wake for a feeding at around 1:30. Will this become like they used to and have them sleeping through the night? Also, we have started to put them in their cribs for day naps today and they weren't sleeping the lengths that they normally would in the swing. Their last nap was only thirty minutes and Addie was so overtired, I put them both back in the swing where they are right now. It has been about three hours, their nap. Is this okay? I know that their naps should become less frequent and less time but my girls like to sleep. HELP!!!

Hi and :welcome: to TS and the first year.

You can go to lilypie.com and create a ticker and then get the code for HTML and paste that into your signature here on TS in your profile.

At 4 months mine were just starting to get into a routine of the morning nap about 1.5 hours after they woke for the day. Then there were at least 3 if not 4 naps after that one. We finished alot of naps in the swings and never had an issue getting out of that habit.

Welcome to TS and congrats on your baby girls! My baby girl's name is Rylee too

As for the naps, I think a 3 hr nap is much too long for a 4 month old. I know they need sleep, don't get me wrong, but I think if you keep plugging away at the crib they'll slowly start sleeping longer there. I started the crib napping around 4 months as well and my babes also started with 30 min naps. But slowly they extended that time and now it's anywhere from 45 mins to 1.5 hrs at a time.

At 4 months they still had 4-5 naps a day, depending on how long each one was. They still sleep about 4 times a day, they can only stay up about 2 hrs before getting very grouchy.

Each baby is different and you definetly throw some rules out the window when you have twins, so if you need them to nap in the swing after waking too early from the crib, I don't think it's a problem. I just don't think I'd let them nap 3+ hrs yet :)

my guys are almost four months and we're struggling w crib naps as well. In crib 45 minutes is the longest they go. So, often I punt and use swing or bouncy.

My LOs had a 3 hour morning nap until about 4 mos old. I think it was more of an extension of nighttime and I did not wake them up. They were big sleepers - wish they were now! :) I have also given in to the swing many times because when I nap them in their cribs I would only get 30-45 mins each time and I just reached a point where I decided I wasn't ready to give up those swings! :)

Thank you for the replies to our sleeping situation with Rilee and Addie. WE have been putting them into their cribs in the morning but only getting 45 minutes at a time. Later in the day we put them into their swings and they sleep for a very long time. I feel bad that I have been making them overtired by putting them into their cribs. For now, we are relying on the swings, possibly one nap in their crib. At night, they are in their cribs and waking once for an early a.m. feed. I am hoping they will eventually grow out of this and sleep all through the night.

I think you are doing great and don't need to worry too much about their sleeping habits - I think swings are still okay at this age. Waking once during the night apiece really is pretty good.

We have a similar arrangement to yours - babies sleep in their cribs at night and swings or cribs or bouncy seat during the day. They often take a 3 hour nap from noon (after 2nd bottle) to 3, and they still do fine at night. But, this is usually after what you described - a short (45 min - 1 hour) morning nap and they might still need a short cat nap before bed time.

At 4 months mine were taking at least 4 naps a day, sometimes in the bouncy seats and sometimes in the crib. Now that they are 5 months and rolling, they can't sleep in their chairs anymore because they try to turn over; so all of our naps are in the cribs these days. We are just now getting around to 3 45-60 minute naps/day and about 11 hours of sleep overnight.

My girls napping habits were very similar at that age too. Once we made the transition to crib we did suffer very short naps and grouchy babies for a while but they got through it using CIO and on a good day can nownap for 2.5hrs at a time. I hope naps settle down soon for you, they caused me so much frustration a couple of months back
