I don't think mine are getting enough and are being terrors because of it. I'm having a really difficult time getting them to nap at all, so they are averaging about 10.5 hours total of sleep for a 24 hour period. Last night they were in bed at 7:45 pm and were up at 6 and 6:30 am and neither one took a nap today. Just wondering what the average is.

Mine go to sleep at 8pm and wake up around 8am usually. They sometimes do not nap (though I try!) but when they do, they take a good 1.5-2 hour nap (1:30-3:30pm). This schedule has been going on since they were about 20 months old or so!

mine go to bed at 8pm, wake up at 7. So that's 11 hours, then they usually nap about an hour in the after noon. So about 12, but since they usually take a few minutes to an hour to fall asleep, I think it is more like 10 hrs.

Mine get around 12 or 12.5 hours. They're always asleep by 8:30 pm (usually by 8:15), awake between 6:45-7:00 am, and nap for about 1.5 hours from 1:30-3:00.

I'm pretty sure they still need that nap and the bad behavior is because of that. What have you done to re-establish a nap? Maybe we can help you get them napping again.

    At that age:

bed at 7:30 up at 6:30 , nap from 12:30-2....so about 11-13 hours (depending on if one DD napped). I had one for sure napper and one hit or miss napper.

Now at 4. One DD still naps often (the other does not) and they both sleep 7:30- 6:30 am. so 11-12 hours .

Mine two have AWFUL behavior and very short fuses (and attention spans) if they do not get enough sleep. I found that I had to put them to bed earlier--they do not sleep past 6:30/7 unless they are sick. So to get enough sleep I we found that an earlier bedtime was the only way to get enough hours in.

We are only a week into two but...
DS sleeps from 7:30 pm to 7:30 am and usually naps from 1-3:30 to 4.
DD however...it really depends and she is so challenging...some nights she is asleep by 8 and others between 9:30-10 and naps are hit and miss for her. For a month, she did not nap and then we had almost two weeks of great naps and now she is back to not napping :grr:
Forgot to add that she usually is up between 8 and 8:30am.

Mine sleep for 12-13 hours total. They still take naps. Although, DD usually has 2 days a week where she refuses to nap. I still make her lay down for an hour or so though. When she doesn't nap, she is exhausted by bedtime.

Generally they get 11 (sometimes 12) at night and 2-3 hours of nap in the afternoon.

My boys go to bed at 7:30 and wake at 7:00. They take a nap from 1:00 - 4:00. On days they are not feeling well, they'll sleep until 5:00 and will still fall right to sleep at 7:30.

When our schedule is off (like christmas) and they don't get naps or shorter naps, we will have a few crabby days until they can catch up.

funny side note, mine got to go to a kids only New Years party a couple and their teenage daughters from church were throwing, and they stayed up until almost 3! They ended up sleeping until almosy 11 this morning and still took a 1.5 hr nap.

Naps are essential. Sometimes, you just have to put them in their cribs/beds and let them cry themselves into a nap.

At 2, they were sleeping 7pm - 7am, and taking a nap that could be anywhere from 45 min-2 hrs.

Mine sleep about 7-7 and then take a 2-3 hour nap daily. I think naps are still very essential at that age.

We are still 2 days away from officially being 2, but....

They usually are asleep by 7:30 and up at 6:30 M-F. On weekends they will sleep until 7:30 OR 8:00. They will nap anywhere from 45 minutes - 3 hours (oh how I love those 2.5+ hour naps!! :)).

    Weekdays: 12ish hours

    Weekends: 14ish hours

Around exactly age 2 and a little after, they were getting a total of about 11.5 hours. Now, they are getting more again: 12-13 at night and 1.5-2 hours at naptime! I hope this trend continues! :D

Mine sleep from about 7:30 - 6:30 and nap from 12 - 2:30, so they get about 13.5 hours of sleep a day. They've been on the same routine since they were about 18 months and go to sleep pretty easy (I hope I'm not jinxing myself!).

Mine get about 11 hours at night, and a good 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon. So, I'd say we average about 13 to 14 hours of sleep per day -- and they NEED that much. To compare, my almost-6-year-old needs about 11 hours of sleep (she doesn't nap), and she gets about 10 to 10.5 at night. So, she really needs to catch up on the weekends.

I don't know why they stopped napping. They refuse to fall asleep and even if I am in their room sitting on the floor they will do anything they can to not go to sleep like play with their sheets, kick the walls or jump on the bed. If I say "stop or you're going to time out" then they run to the time out bench since that's what they wanted anyway - to be out of bed! Last night I made them go to bed at 6 pm b/c they were so tired and cranky. They screamed for a good 2 minutes but then fell asleep and slept until 6 and 6:30 am. I don't know how to get them to nap!

My boys sleep 7:30-8pm to 6-7am. They're very inconsistent with their wake times, which drives me insane (even with our new "Tot Clock"). Naps are 1.5-2.5 hrs (typically around the 2 hr mark).

I have to separate my 2 to nap. Have you tried that? I don't know that mine would ever nap if I had them in the same room. I also dread the toddler bed transition, as I worry what will happen to my easy-to-sleep sleepers! I think I'll die if they ever stop napping....

Yeah, if I separate them then they'll cry themselves to sleep and sleep for about 30 minutes. The problem is they share a room so for awhile I put one of them in the twin PNP in the other bedroom but I can't do that anymore. They are escape artists, whoever is in the PNP is out in about 30 seconds.

Mine have napped in separate rooms since they were 12 months (one in a PnP, the other in her crib). Then at 18 months we gave them their own rooms mainly to stop sleeping problems. They're now in toddler beds as well, so at naptime, they each go to bed and stay in their rooms for at least an hour. DS always naps. DD is about 50/50 on the naps right now. But no matter what, she's in her room alone for at least an hour to give her the opportunity to nap.

Is there a way to completely toddler-proof the guest room and put one down for a nap in there? Do a nice, short naptime routine (diaper change, read one book or sing a song), put them in their separate nap places, close the doors and give them an hour. They might not nap for the first few days either, but eventually they will. I think going in to them, even to tell them to stop playing, is stimulating and probably not going to help them fall asleep. (At least, that's been my experience.)

Or, are you able to soothe them to sleep and then put them in their beds? If you absolutely cannot separate them, that might be an option. Rock one to sleep, put her in her bed, then rock the other to sleep, and put her in her bed. It might be worth it to get them napping again. I rock my DS to sleep for naps now that he is in a toddler bed. It takes 5 minutes, and he is still able to fall asleep on his own for bedtime so I don't worry about it. To me, getting him to nap is too important because his behavior is awful without a nap. I didn't mind starting that "bad habit" because it was worth it to me to get him to nap.

like the above post, i still soothe mine to sleep on the floor on quilts. then i put them in their beds when they fall asleep. it's the only way i can do it alone for naps.... we average 11 hours at night and 2 for naps, but it's all over the place. ferber (who i didn't follow at all as we didn't do any sleep training, but whom i respect as a sleep researcher) came up w/new "sleep needs" info recently. here's the chart. it basically says that 2 year olds on average need 11.5 hours in a 24 hour period.

best of luck! sleep is the hardest challenge of all, i feel.

They go to sleep at night usually between 7pm & 7:30pm and are up at 8am. Naps are hit or miss but when they do nap they go about 2-3:15ish so they are getting approx. 13hrs of sleep a day...give or take.

I have often wondered this, too. My girls still nap but I have a hard time getting them to nap (I put them down around 1 or 1:30 and sometimes it is almost 3 before they fall asleep (at which point it is a toss up on whether or not I just get them up ... some days, I feel like they just really N-E-E-D a nap!) and when this happens, we put them down between 8:30 and 9 and sometimes it is 10 before they fall asleep ... then they are up around 8 or 8:30 (or on rare days around 9) ... this would all be OK if two things weren't the case ... #1 my husband has to get up at 5 AM to go to work (he is an Anesthesiologist and has to get there in time to prep for the 6AM surgeries) so he gets N-O downtime between when they go to bed and when he needs to go to bed ... and #2 their MMO starts at 8:30 on T/TH so I have to wake them to get them there and they are always grumpy ... I think we are just at one of those transistions where you are darned if you do, darned if you don't ... if I wake them every morning or wake them from naps ... they are soooooo grumpy so it is hard for me to know what to do ... sounds like we are in a little of the same boat. I would say they get between 11 and 13 hours depending on if they take a nap and how long it takes them to fall asleep at night ... sorry for the long reply ... got on my own soapbox there ;)

    Very jealous here!

No one has said anything about how many times a night the kids wake up. My girls go to bed between 7 and 9 (typically about 7:30)and wake up between 4 and 6. They nap most days for 2 hours. But they are up multiple times during the night, which I think changes the quality of the sleep. I know it does for me.

Curious as to how often other kids this age are up at night.

    Thanks!

Still a month shy of two here, but close enough.

They generally sleep 12 hours at night - the range is probably 11-13, but usually in the 12-13 range. On weekdays, they usually nap 1 - 1.5 hours. On weekends, it's usually 2-3. Of course, we have the random days they skip naps, but those are still the exception, not the rule.

So, I'll say they average in the 13-14 hours a day range?
