    Hi there!

How many diapers do newborns need per week?

If I'm having a boy /girl, do they need different diapers? If they are long & thin babies what would suit them then?
Don't want to stock up on diapers, if I don't know what will fit them & what won't..

    HELP?! [IMG]

You might want to post this question on the First Year board.

I have heard that newborns should have 6-8 wet and poopy diapers per day (EACH); that's a good gauge that they're eating enough.

When our daughter was a newborn, we changed her with every feeding, which was roughly every 3 hours, 'round the clock. So, figure on at least 8 diapers a day, plus a couple extra for random blowouts, etc.

So, 10 a day would mean about 70 a week...PER kid, of course!

I don't think there's a boy/girl thing with diapers, but different diapers do fit different kids. We had good luck with Pampers Swaddlers last time, in the newborn size, so we'll probably get those again. (And our daughter was definitely long and skinny.)

Then, we cloth diapered for about six months...which is another post entirely...but afterwards, continued to have good luck with Pampers Cruisers...

    Hey Becca! [IMG]

    Thanks again for the advice!

I'm definitely thinking I'm carrying a boy/girl. Guess this is all part of the adventure, figuring motherhood out.. [IMG]

    God bless

Hey Denise -- you and I are only one day apart in our pregnancies! Looking forward to sharing experiences...

And I am having a boy and a girl! When do you find out for sure?

DH and I went to a multiples parenting class and they said not to stock-up o newborn diapers b/c you don't know how big your babies will be and how long they will be in them. they said it was better to just buy these as needed after the first 1-2 packages. they also said to stock up on size one and two and taht for twins it is roughly 600 diapers a month! The class was taught by a NICU RN who is also the mother of triplets, so we actually put some stock into her advice. We did find good deals at Sam's club on diapers you can get 216 pampers cruisers for roughly $29 and they take coupons here which helps as well. you can also buy wipes in bulk there and formula if you plan to bottle feed. The unit prices on all of these items were significantly better than even the unit prices on generic items at many other stores. Hope this helps a bit! [IMG]

Same as pp, I change them before each feeding, which is every 3 hours, and then there is the occasional blowout in the middle of changing...so probably 9 per day, per baby...so that's....126 a week? Yikes! We're using Pampers newborns at the moment, and they seem to hold well after mommy and daddy learned to put them on correctly [IMG]

Thanks for the replies ladies! [IMG]

Dh actually mentioned to wait until babies are born, so that we'll know for sure what would fit them etc. Guess one should listen to your other half more, hey? [IMG]

Yes, the adivce given is really going to help! Thank you!!

Becca, I'll know for sure at my next u/s appointment. Which will be on the 8 March. At my last ob appointment the doc took a look & he said that it looks like a boy/girl, but that he could not say for sure.

    Great getting to know y'all!

I went ahead and ordered a package each of Huggies and Pampers in NB sizes from 1800diapers.com - mainly to figure out which we like better. I am almost 36 weeks along and my babies are measuring approximately 5.5 lbs. I figure if they are born in the next 2 weeks they will be close to 6lbs. My other two kids were 8lbs and almost 9 lbs when they were born (singletons not twins) and I know my bigger baby used at least or almost one package of NB diapers before he outgrew them. We'll see what happens - if not I know I can pass them on to someone else (my brother just called to tell me he and his wife are expecting #2 in October). As far as boys and girls differing - I know I liked Huggies for my daughter and Pampers for my son - but alot of that has to do with the individual child, like their shape and where they 'squirt'.
Newborns seem to go through more diapers than older babies. I know my 3 year old (who is also being potty trained) uses maybe 4-5 diapers a day - if he doesn't use the potty.

Just so you know, most of the cheaper diapers...Luvs, White Cloud, Parents Choice...are just as good as the more expensive ones. I always bought pampers for my ds and then I finally tried the cheaper ones and have saved SOOOO much money.

i too, there for my first 2 pregnancies, used huggies for both of my sons but they were also alergic to the cheaper brands (my luck of course) but with my daughter we used white cloud. i think i only paid about $11 or so for about 58 diapers from walmart or dollar general and that lasted her about 2 weeks. so that helped us out because my husband got paid every 2 weeks. the only thing that you have to watch out for with any diaper is the material in them and that your children don't have any alergic reactions. i never bought diapers until they were born due to not knowing what size they were going to need. all 3 of my children were in different sizes at birth. my oldest was in size 2 and my 2nd son was in size 1 and my daughter wore premie for 1 week so you never know what they are going to wear. good luck!!!
    lots of love!

I have bought two packs of size 1 and am going to get 2 more packs of newborns, next pay day. I just recieved my order of cloth dipes for my babes when they reach 10 lbs. That seems so far off, but I know it comes quicker then we think.

can't help in terms of different diapers for girls/boys but i have read that you need to make sure that if you have a boy you point his penis DOWN when you are diapering....not sure if it helps w/leaks but it might help w/keeping from getting it in the eye when you are changing him!

we needed preemie diapers for both kids....those were hard to find. we only found them in huggies or pampers. For us, the pampers swaddlers have been great - also in Newborn and size 1 (it's the same brand the hospital used). We tried huggies and didn't like them and I had a white cloud sample which also wasn't great.

The trick on stocking up is you don't know when your kids will go up a size...

We stocked up on the newborn diapers and as long as the cases were not opened we just exchanged the unopened ones for the next size up when we needed them. I also sold all of my open packages of diapers that no longer fit the twins on ebay they sell really good, more $$ for more diapers. You can also stock up on the whips you will need tons and also creamy desitine (make sure its the creamy or else its like trying to spread frozen butter on a piece of bread [IMG])Hope that helps. Good Luck!!

Right now I really like the White Could diaps (wally world generic). They are pretty similar to huggies - they stretch and are not scented. I'm sending a few friends to Sam's, as I do not have a card, to check out prices of White Cloud and Huggies. My little boy was allergic to Pampers. Probably the scent I'm guessing.

Now, where to store all of these diapers?

I loved the Pampers Swaddlers. We started out in the newborn size (not preemie) and then moved up to size 1. The newborns were actually really big, but we just folded the top over so that it didn't cover their belly bs. The preemie size was hard to find and they're alot more expensive I think.

I think mine probably used about 8-10 diapers each per day at first.

We have been stocking up for awhile. I have been buying newborn and size 1. I figure if they grow out of the newborn, I can exchange them for the next size up. I used huggies for both my older ones, but this time since I am diapering two I figured we will try a cheaper route. I have bought a package or two from many of our local stores generics to try and see if I like them. Hopefully they really do work as well as the pricey ones. That would help a lot!

A good recommendation is 10-12 per baby per day. Most people change the babies at every feeding (8-9 times a day) and then also whenever the babies poop or otherwise need changing for some reason. We're not picky and used all types of diapers on our girls since we received many at our baby shower.
