How long were your twins in newborn/0-3 clothes?

I'm trying to put together a list of what more we need, and I'm kind of lost clothing wise - the girls will be our first children, and I know they grow quickly, but I really have no idea how quickly (and it's hard to ask the women I know with singletons, because our babies may start out a bit smaller). We're due with the girls in December, which in Chicago, is normally bitterly cold, and doesn't get better until March!

    Right now I have:

    short sleeve onesies: 10
    fleece footy pjs: 4
Long sleeve onesies - 14 (4 with matching pants)
    pants/jacket sets: 4
    cotton footy pjs/outfits: 6

We have probably another half dozen various outfits, mostly long sleeved / pants type of stuff.

How much more (or less) do I need in newborn/0-3 months? Any tips on how long it will be until I need 3-6 month stuff? (I'm trying to plan for the weather!)

    Thanks!

I'm in California so it never gets all that cold, but they basically lived in footed sleepers when it was chilly and now they live in short-sleeved onesies. They will wear some "real" outfits with matching pants or little dresses occasionally when we go to a bbq or something like that but not often. They were 6 and 7 lbs at birth but still wore preemie size for the first 6 weeks (Walmart carries preemie size while a lot of other stores do not). We also saw a lot of spit up so we'd have to change their clothes at least a couple of times a day in the beginning, so either but a bunch of cheap things or be prepared to do a lot of laundry! They wore 0-3 mo size until about 4 months, and have been pretty much right on track since then. They are turning one in a month and the 12 mo size is getting a little snug on Avery while Sophie could still squeeze into a few 9 mo size things if I really wanted her to.

    Have fun!

For the first few months I was too tired to put them in "adorable outfits." I just used the sleep-n-play one pieces for all day and night. They lived in them. Occasionally I would put them in a onesie with a matching bottom. So I might suggest a few of those. I think BRU sold them in a 3 pack. As for 3-6 mo that's a tough one because you dont know when they will be born and how they will grow. I wouldnt buy too much ahead of time and if you do, dont wash them-keep the tags on. Good luck on the rest of your pregnancy.

Mine stayed in newborn for about a month and they were a month early. Then went to 0-3 and stayed in those until they were about 3.5 months old. I would say get very little in the newborn size. If you are super early you can always get someone to pick some up for you. Get lots of one piece outfits or footed sleepers in the 0-3. I really only starting putting mine in cute outfits when they were about 7 weeks old even then there were many days that I just changed them from one sleeper to another. If people are getting you clothes as gifts ask for later sizes too like 3-6 or 6-12. I have so many brand new 0-3 month clothes that they never wore.

For the 0-3 month clothes I would get more footed sleepers especially this time of year it will save you the hassle of trying to get socks to stay on tiny toes. I had a list of what you would need for a singleton and basically times by 1.5

    Have fun!!

It really depends on when they are born. Mine were born at 30 weeks in December. We live in MN, so it doesn't start to feel like spring until May. We just moved into 3-6 month clothes and my girls will be 9 months old on the 23rd. They are 14 pounds now. I agree with PP that it's too exhausting to dress them in cute clothes in the beginning. The girls came home from the NICU at 2 months old and wore sleepers day and night for at least the first month home and maybe even a bit longer than that. I really have had a hard time buying clothes in advance because it's hard to judge how big they will be during which season.

ETA: My girls were still in preemie size until nearly 3 months old, so it really varies depending on the size of your babies and when they were born. I just wouldn't buy too much ahead if you can avoid it.

Mine were born at 34 weeks and were in preemies for about 6-8 weeks. DD is still in 0-3 and she is 5 months old. DS is in 3-6(hes my little porker) It all depends on their birth weight

its hard to tell - my girls were born at 35 wks so they were real little and are in 6-9 mo clothes now and are 9 mos, the smaller one (almost 14lbs) still fits intosome 3mos size clothing. id buy a few packs of gerber brand newborn footed pjs they run small in size so should fit if they are little. my girls were swimming in the premie sized stuff for the first few weeks and didnt fit into 0-3 until 3 mos. you'll probably have to play it by ear. and send someone out to buy extra stuff when they are born. on the other hand my friends boys are little chunkers and i am sure she would tell you the opposite. good luck - sounds like you have enough for now.

My guys were pretty big for twins, and they wore newborns for about a month. Right now they just turned 3 months, and they are starting to wear 3-6. They fit into the 0-3 sizes that run big, but it's a tight fit.

Mine didn't stay in the newborn stuff long at all - I went to a local second hand store and stocked up on footed sleepers and onesies (depending on the weather in your area). Mine LIVED in footed sleepers for pretty much the first 5 months of their lives. I couldn't be bothered with anything else, too hard to get on and off them. Plus we went through a ton of them in the first few months, they often needed a clothing change with every diaper change. Which is why when the babies were 1wk old I went out and bought like 20 from the second hand store for like $40!

I'd recommend a few preemie sleepers for the early days/weeks, especially since your babies are girls - my g/b twins were fairly big at birth at 5.5 and 6.5 pounds, but were still in preemie sizes for nearly 6 weeks. My DD finally outgrew all her 0-3 month clothes at 6 months, and can still fit in many of her 3-6 month clothes at nearly 8 months. She's a tiny one, so you never know...but I'd guesstimate that you'll be in 0-3 for at least 3-4 months, if not longer.

Check out your local Mom to Mom sale and stock up on a variety of stuff and sizes. Then you will have what you need and wont have spent a whole lot of money!!

    Good luck,

    ;)

my girls just turned 3 months and can still wear a few newborn or 0-3 month outfits, but the 3 month outfits fit them better. i've only put them in a 3-6 month outfit twice and they were from old navy and ran kinda small for what i would have expected a 3-6 month to be. but with carters stuff, they are fitting in 3 month outfits perfectly.

It depends a lot on the size of your babies... One of mine was in newborn size for 2 months, then in 0-3 month for another 2 months... the other one outgrew each in one month. They were tiny and yet we only had one preemie outfit for each. DS never wore his. I guess I'd get 2-3 just in case, mine swam in their newborn outfits for a while.

Honestly, all you'll need for a while is warm PJs. I never used short sleeves onesies until June, nor did I use long sleeves onesies because putting pants on is just too much of a pain. I just put them in more 'everyday' one piece outfits when I went out. They each had about 10 PJs and I'm glad we got so many because of all the spitting up accidents. My advice is to get the ones with zipper. Gerber has cheap packages of 3 for $10 or something. If you're going to swaddle (which I strongly recommend), I'm not sure I'd use fleece so they don't overheat. I guess it depends how cool you keep your house. If you want fleece, I think Carters makes fleece PJs with zipper but I might be wrong...

Don't buy alot of preemie stuff unless you go super early and then you can send dh or somebody to get some. My girl was only 6 lbs but the preemie sleepers were much too short for her. She was in newborn and then 0-3 mos until right about 3mos old. Ds on the other hand was 8lbs at birth and wore newborn for about a week then 0-3 til about 6weeks then had to move up to 3-6 mos. I HIGHLY recommend gowns for night time for the first month or so. By then ds feet stuck out because he'd grown so much but I just put socks on him and they were still swaddled at that point. Not having to do a million tiny snaps in the middle of the night is priceless!!

    Mine were born at 35w 1d weighing 5lbs 11oz and 5lbs 7oz...

Preemie sizes: only were able to wear them in the Special Care Nursery - by the time we came home, they were too big for them. Really, they were almost too big for them in the Nursery (we were there 1 week).

Newborn sizes: they wore these until they were about 8 weeks old

0-3 months: they wore these from about 8 weeks until 3.5/4 months

3-6 months: they wore these from 3.5/4 mons and they outgrew some about 1 month ago while they are still able to wear others.

6-9 months: they started wearing this size at about 8 months old and they have room to grow as of today!

My girls both spent about 3 months in each size of clothing. Sierra moved into 0-3 month clothes at 3 months old and Ainsley moved into them between 2-2.5 months old. Before that, they wore preemie & newborn sizes.

Even in slightly warm weather, you can't go wrong with pajamas so those are always a good thing to have extras of. In cool weather, onesies are really only useful for layering. I've never used many of them.

E & D were born in Feb in Maine and they spent about a month in 0-3 clothes and then they fit better in the 3-6 month footed sleepers. They were born bigger than normal for twins so it does depend on how much they weigh and how well they gain weight.

Mine were born at 35w6d. They were 4lbs10oz and 5lbs2oz. Will was in preemie clothes for 2 months and Ellie was in them for 3 1/2 months. They are now almost 5 months and Will is just now in 3 (sometimes 3- 6 months) clothes. Ellie is still in newborn clothes.

I'm weird and they've always worn full outfits. I only put them in pj's for bed.

It really depends on how fast they grow. My twins have grown pretty fast. At three and a half months, they weigh 13 and 15 pounds. They have been wearing three to six months clothing since they were a little over two months.

My advice would be don't by too much now. Especially if you are having a baby shower. People tend to buy clothes alot.

Thanks everyone for all of the replies! It sounds like I need maybe a few more footed sleepers in newborn and 0-3 sizes, and I'll probably stop after that and re-evaluate after they're here! I know everything depends on when they're born, and how fast they grow, I just wanted to get a general idea!

We've already had our shower (our families and friends are all 800 miles away, so 24 weeks was about the latest I could fly to visit everyone!), though I'm SURE people will give us more clothes along the way (my mom, in particular is very excited about her first grandchildren, and has been waiting for-ev-er to buy baby stuff!)

all the girls wore were onesies and sleepers from 0-3 months! All the "cutsie" clothes were wasted because we didn't go anywhere and I was to tired to care what the looked like basically!

Stock up on your essentials! You'll probably get a lot of clothes as gifts once the babies come too!

My boys were only 5'14 and 5'8 when they born but they are now 15.5 and 16.5 pounds and wearing 6 to 9 month clothes. It's good to get enogh 0-3 month sleepers and then see how fast they are growing before buying more.

They went into 0-3 month at 7 weeks and stayed in that size until 3 months.
