How long to wait for a level 2 u/s?

I found out I was having twins last Tuesday at 19 weeks, and I had an OB appt on Thursday. The OB wanted to schedule me for a level 2 u/s.

I am still waiting to find out when my appt is going to be. Apparently, their hospital does not do them; they only do them at the other hospital in the city.

When I called today to ask, they told me that they sent over the paperwork, and the level 2 place came back with a date in March. So we are still waiting.

This is very stressful and the longer I wait, the more worried I get since I have not been monitored for multiples for the first half of the pregnancy. What is the normal amount of time to wait for a level 2 u/s?

    TIA.

I had my level two ultrasound at 19 weeks. I knew from 8 weeks i was having twins.

I should add that the level 2 was requested because it was unclear how many placentas there were from the initial u/s.

Found out at 15 weeks it was twins, and had the level 2 at 20 weeks. We already knew they were mono/di though, and were being monitored for TTTS, even though they didnt end up having it.

Congrats!!!! I would think if the number of placentas is in question, you would want to have the level II sooner rather than later. There can be complications with 1 placenta that you'd want to monitor. I would call your OB and see if they can push for a sooner date. Most are done around 20 weeks.

That's the problem. The place that my OB's office is trying to schedule with takes *forever* to schedule things. And then when they did, they gave us something in March. My OB's office told them that it was unacceptable, and now we're waiting for these other people who do the Level 2s to give us something better. I know that one placenta can mean complications, and that is why I am so worried and stressed about this. :(

There are a lot of misunderstandings about level 2 u/s. A lot of people call the 20w u/s level 2, but it's usually just a level 1 where they go through all details, etc. Level 2 is an u/s where they look at 1 particular part of a baby, e.g. heart and/or placenta, etc. Some people call that level 3, but according to my doctor and sonogram person that doesn't exist. It's either level 1 (just scan the overall baby which can be a quick one to check a few things and/or everything) and a level 2 to check one specific part. So my 20w one was just a level 1, which took about 35 minutes per child. There was no need for a level 2 since everything appeared normal and within normal range.

This is definitely a level 2. It is in a different location than the regular scan, and apparently, they are the only people in the city who do level 2s. I am going to have regular scans about once a month, but the OB did want me to have one level 2.

With my DD, I had two regular level 1 scans after my 20 week one. They had no trouble getting me right in- later that week- or even the same day.

I don't mind waiting. I understand that this is different than the regular scan and that there might be a long line. It is just frustrating that it has been three business days and I still don't have an appt because there is so much back-and-forth with this other office.

I'm sorry it's taking them so long to get back to you and get you in there. I hope you hear from them soon.

I found out we were expecting twins at 21 weeks(routine u/s), and I was able to get into MFM within the week. I hope they are able to schedule you sooner!

Sorry, I agree that you're indeed waiting for a level 2, however a level 2 doesn't have to be done at 20 w. I was just trying to make clear that people think level 2 = 20w u/s which is not correct. On the other hand, I agree that they would need to get you in as soon as possible depending on the urgency, regardless of how many weeks you are.

    Good luck!

Sorry there has been scheduling problems! Congrats on your twins!!

We knew from 5w4d that it was twins. I had my Level 2/anatomy u/s done at 18w5d. Pretty much from 18-20wks they are done. Earlier than that and there is a chance things aren't seen well enough, so it needs to be done later.

    Hope things go okay. ;)

I found out I was having twins at 12 weeks, 6 days and had a Level II u/s at 15 weeks. This was really early for one, so I had another one done four weeks later.

I found out really early that I was having twins ( 10 weeks) so my OB sent me to the high risk Dr at 15 weeks and then every 4 weeks for an ultrasound from then on until i was 30 weeks then every two weeks. so really you would only be one visit behind and as long as everything is going wll so far, I wouldn't lose sleep....trust me you are gonna need all the sleep you can get!!! Good luck and contrats!!!!!

Thank you for the kind words and encouragement. I have an update!

I am glad my OB's office was lobbying for me (after the level 2 people wanted to schedule the appt sometime in March)- they got me an appt for this Friday!

I suppose everything was going well- nothing came up on the regular scan, but I guess the report wasn't clear about how many placentas there were.

I will keep everyone posted and update again on Friday.

Sounds like you have a good OB! It is very important to have an OB that is on your side and someone that you like and trust.
Congrats on the twins and let us know how it goes!

I had mine at 11 weeks to see if there was 1 or 2 placentas because they were so close together.
