How long to finish bottle?

I was talking to a friend this morning and she said she thought my daughters drank their bottles really fast compared to her kids. I had never thought about whether two minutes or thirty minutes was the norm, and now I'm curious.

How long does it take your twins to finish their bottles? Do they take the same time to finish their bottles at each feeding, or does it vary? Did you see the length of time per bottle go up as they ate more or did they get more efficient at eating?

    The answers for me are:

    1. It takes one of my daughters under five minutes always and the other takes under five minutes if she's in the mood and up to 30 if she's not. If that happens, she'll eat a little, refuse for 10 minutes, eat a little more, etc.

    2. For one daughter, it's always the same. Stick a bottle in her mouth and she drinks it all down with no fuss. The other daughter... see above!

    3. Feeding time may have gotten slightly longer as they started drinking more, but the difference hasn't been big enough to really notice.

Well mine are only 6 weeks old and it takes them about 30 min to finish 3-4oz. Usually they finish within 5 minutes of each other.

I do not think it matters as long as it stays down! We were told in the NICU to not spend anymore than 30 min feeding. Anything after 30 min, they are expending more energy than they are taking in.

DS can down 6 ounces in 10 minutes, DD takes 15-20 to eat 3.5/4. I do make DS stop halfway and burp otherwise the whole bottle is likely to come back up!

Ummm...both my kiddos will drink a bottle in 5-10 minutes of 4-6 oz. And they have always been fast drinkers. I have admit my BAD mommy moment though. Before I had them I pulled out all of DD's old bottles and washed them. It wasn't until they were a couple of weeks old that I noticed I was using stage 2 nipples. I tried moving them back to stage 1 and boy did they get frustrated! I think DS would do better on stage 1 because he's messy and sometimes I have to pace him by pulling the bottle out, but DD is fine on stage 2. Now that they are 3 months old I think it's crazy to go backwards so I keep them both on stage 2. The really funny thing is there is ONE stage 1 nipple floating around and every once in awhile when it takes them 20+ minutes to eat one of us will be like ... damn, I got the stage 1 nipple!

I only give bottle ocassionaly as I am bf but when my DS will take it most of the time he will be done in 5 min. He gets frusterated if I use the slow flow nipples now and will fuss and not eat if it takes too long. If your babies are fussy you can try a faster flow nipple.

Wow I am sooo jealous of your fast eaters!! As a PP said, we dont go longer than 30 min but usually in that time DD1 will take about 3 ounces and DD2 will take just over 2. I really have to work with them the whole time. It is really a painstaking process in my household!

It was quite a process for us too when we first brought the girls home. It would take forever for them to drink 30cc's and we lived by the rules of the NICU- they have to finish within 30 minutes and then get back to sleep. We'd undress them to keep them awake, or swirl the nipple in their mouths to make sure they remembered to suck, or deal with the fact that sometimes they'd hold their breath while eating.. oh those were the days. But eventually they caught on and now they are champs.
