I'm wondering how long a 6 month old can/should be able to sleep at night w/out a feeding? My twins are not eating well during the day and I'm thinking I should take away their night feeding. They are taking one feeding at night (6 oz). I've tried to ween them from the feeding already by giving them less every couple nights but it just makes them mad and they're back up before it's time. We're having other sleeping problems too and I'm about to let them CIO so I'm trying to decide whether to force them to drop the feeding or not. Obviously I don't want to force them if they're not ready or if it will do them any harm... !

MY DD goes 12 hours at night. THen she eat at 7, 9 and 11. So she makes up for it. But she has been doing this for almost 2 months.

At 6 months all 3 of mine were sleeping 12 hours at night without waking up to eat. Well the twins started at 6.5 months. All babies are different though.

My boys are almost 5 months and have been going from 5:30pm to 11:30pm/12:30am without eating. Last night I fed them closer to 6 and they ate better. When they woke at 12:30, I soothed them w/ pacis and they slept another hour and a half. So they went 8 hours for the first time ever. I think we're going to CIO if it's not better by 6 months. HTH.

Mine sleep 9 hours without eating and have been doing that for about a month now. Like PP said, I think every baby is different.

Mine are 5 months -- but they regularly do 9-10 hours without food -- we've never gotten to 12 hours.

Mine are 6 1/2 mos, but around 6 mos my chunkier DS (he's 20 lbs now) started going 13 hrs....now he goes 13-14 w/o a fuss.

My other son (he's 18 lbs) goes about 9-10 hrs, but doesn't eat as well during the day. Right now he's sick, so once he's healthy again, we're going to try to see if he can stretch it out further or work on CIO to make it to 12 hrs. He's done it a few times, so we know he can!!!

At six months my girls ate every four hours through the night. It wasnt until into the 8th month that I was able to cut out a feeding, and now it is go to bed, sleep 3 hours, eat, then sleep for 8-9 hours. When I decided to cut out that feeding, I tried to feed them as much as possible the day before, so that they wouldnt wake up hungry, they just woke up mad, and cryed for about 20 mins or so. It took about a week to get them used to the idea.

My babies still eat at night! But they can do 8 hr stretches, and occasionally STTN.

HSHHC says that babies may need night feedings up until 9 months. (Obviously Weissbluth never met my babies, who still need them at 10 mo... )

About the daytime eating - could they be coming down with something? Are they ready to move up to a faster-flow nipple? Have you started or increased solids recently?

Mine go 13 hours between feeds and sleep 12 hours straight at night. They have been doing this for 5 months now. For the most part they eat very well during the day. They both have 3 bottles. DD's bottles are 9oz. and DS's are 10oz. They also have solids 3 times per day!

We were feeding on demand during the day and they slept 11 hours through the night.

Plenty of babies are still eating once a night at 6 months old. As long as your little ones weren't too premature, they can probably go without it though. First, I would try to get them to eat and drink more during the day. Then start watering down their nighttime formula rather than decreasing the amount. Do it very slowly. Once they are just drinking water at that feeding, then decrease the amount in the bottle. It may take a while to go through the entire process but I found it to be the easiest method for getting my two to sleep through the night.

Mine were sleeping about 12 hours per night at that age, drinking 24 oz. during the day with two very small solid meals (about 1 tbsp. cereal, 1/2 veg and 1/2 fruit per baby).
