How long does it take for them to learn not to fall out of the bed?

We just converted our cribs into toddler beds on Saturday. The beds do not have a rail to keep them in - it is more like a daybed now. Grace keeps falling out of the bed. Elizabeth has only fallen out once. My mom says it will only take a couple of days and they will stop falling out. Anyone with experience - will they learn quickly? Or should I go ahead and buy toddler beds with rails?

I guess it would depend on how she sleeps. When we switched, Justin never fell out of bed (toddler beds), but Hailee fell out at least once a night - usually more. She is just a crazy sleeper! The beds they have now are off the ground and have rails except for where the steps are on one end and the slide on the other. So we make sure the giant stuffed horse she sleeps with covers the area where the stairs are (by her head). When we are away from home she still always falls out of whatever bed (usually her air matress sleeping bag) she is sleeping in - like I said, she is just a wild sleeper!

My sister-n-law used a special pillow she ordered online.
    It's called a snug-tuck pillow.

Though looking at the price ($45 each) and the fact you have to buy two....I'm thinking I'm gonna make my own.
And congrats for switching over. My guys are 3 and 1/2 and I still haven't switched to a toddler bed. They never tried to climb out of their cribs and I like it b/c it makes bedtime/naptime so easy (no getting out of bed). I tried lowering the side bars one night but they just wanted them back up. I'm thinking I better switch them over by the end of the summer or else I'm gonna have some really weird looks when I tell people my 4 y/o's are still in cribs.

Heather has never fallen out of her bed. Connor fell out several times over a month so we went ahead with the rail. He's just a wild sleeper and rolls around a lot. I read in another post today that some put a rolled up towel or a water noodle under the sheet at the edge of the bed. Maybe that would be enough to keep them from rolling out.

My two have slept in twin beds without a rail for months and months and we've had nothing but the completely random falling out. Instead of buying a new bed, what about just putting her mattress on the floor if it concerns you or she's overly upset by it? She could get used to not falling off the mattress and then pop it back on the bed in a bit. Good luck!

Last night was much better. Elizabeth stayed in bed all night and Grace only fell out once at around 1:30am. Hopefully, we are on the right track.

That's funny. My pedi told me that we should wait until they climb out of the crib consistently. MIne haven't started yet, so maybe we'll be like you and have 3 1/2 yo in cribs. I'm dreading when they have to switch! :good:
