How long did/will you keep your (baby) monitor(s)?

We have one room/baby monitor in our twins room, which we still find helpful and still use. As I mentioned in another post, we are planning a move in a month, and we will be separating my DD and DS into separate rooms. I am wondering if we should buy another monitor for their other bedroom. Or, if we should drop them completely. Any thoughts?

Another question regarding this is...once your child is old enough to get up out of bed and roam around the house, do you let them do that? Or, do you try to keep them in their rooms until you go get them. For us, once we hear them talking in their room - through the monitor, we know it is time to go get them. I know eventually they will be moving around the house on their own, I just don't know when the best age for that is. In a way, it is hard to believe my babies are getting so big. ;)

    Hope you can help. TIA.

my girls are 2. We still corral them to their rooms and I just recently stopped using the monitor. However they're still both in one room. I put a child resistant knob thing on the inside door knob to their room so they can't get out and roam around the house. I leave their door open with a baby gate in front of it until I go to bed, then I remove and shut the door. I put some books and quiet toys in their room just yesterday to keep them busy if they get up a few minutes before I usually go in and get them. We're still on a pretty tight schedule around here, so I think they know I'll come and get them it's like clockwork. So I'm sure that helps them feel less than anxious about trying to escape. We did 'toddler proof' their room though, DH bolted the chest of drawers to the wall and installed a locking system on the front of the drawers so they can't get in and pull all the clean clothes out. Also things are hung up high on the walls and the closet door has a pin in it so it won't slide open. Their bedroom is right across the hallway from ours so I don't have difficulty hearing them. Good luck, hope you find the answer/advice you can use.

I used a monitor for my 4 yr old till he was around 2.5/3 yrs old. Then with Josh I stopped a lot sooner because he was constantly just waking up to fuss for a few minutes and then go back to sleep. There was no reason for his fussing and I kept getting woke up for nothing really. So i stopped using it and if he did more then fussing I would hear him.
I want to say around 1.5 yrs old with him.

Mine finally figured out how to get out of the gate - I used to leave the door open with the gate up at night but no more! They are pretty good about either staying in their room when they wake up (usually start playing) or coming into my room and waking me up.

I STILL have a monitor in the boys' room just so I can hear what they're doing in there! The three youngest aren't allowed up until I get them. Until I can trust them around the house without me being able to check on them, they won't get up on their own. Sometime in the next six months or so I think Aaron will be able to get up with the big kids. The twins will probably be at least another year. The only reason we don't have a monitor in the girls' room is because they share a wall with us and I can hear Kayci if she needs me. I want to be able to hear them in case they need me but can't get to me. Makes me feel better.

We still use ours just because they are in their cribs and I'm afraid that I won't wake up when they do. I think that if their rooms were far away from ours and we were in your situation I would probably buy a cheap monitor. I definitely wouldn't spend any amount of money on it--maybe find one at a yard sale I could live with. Odds are, you won't be using it very long. If the rooms were close to ours, I wouldn't waste the money.

I think my girls were around 3 when we took it out because they would play with it ... I think they will be okay after you move without it my kids were always and still are told to stay in bed until we get up which is usualy right when they get up or to come wake us up... but what really happens is they get up and turn on the cartoons in the living room and I get up .. with DS I put a door lock cover on the inside of his door and left the monitor in there and as soon as I heard him I would get up... the door knob cover was just for my safe satisfaction because he went out in the back yard once... oo ya so make sure you have goood locks on the front and back doors...

I haven't used the monitor in ages; I found that I couldn't sleep with it on. Our bedroom is right next to theirs, so I can hear very well. When we switched from cribs, I kept all the doors closed at night & a gate in the hallway......that way if they get up, they can only go in their room or ours.
