How long before they "got" it?

    Hello,

I know there have been a million posts lately about starting solid food... sorry to add another, but I have a question and I know you ladies are the experts! How long did it take before your kids "got it" with solids? What I mean is, how long before they understood they should open their mouths and swallow? I've been offering solid food once a day for about three weeks now (I haven't been incredibly consistent, sometimes we skip the solid food if it's a busy day), and one of my daughters does pretty well, but the other rarely even opens her mouth. If I put the food on my finger as opposed to a spoon, she'll maybe taste some, but probably hasn't eaten more than a tablespoon total in three weeks.

How long did it take for the rest of you to have both of your twins get excited about solid food or at least to understand the concept?

    Thanks!

James only took a week or two but Evan took a full month, maybe a bit longer. Just be patient, they'll get there.

I am having the same problem and just did a post about it a moment ago. I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering about this.

I started my girls on cereal at 4.5 months. Lauren took to it prett quickly, but Emma took much longer. Emma was the exact same way in the beginning. The pedi told me it's not for nutrition at this point, so I never pushed it. If I offered and she wanted some, I would attempt to feed her. If she didn't, then I didn't give her any and made sure she had an extra ounce of formula in case she wanted that. I think it honestly took several weeks for her to "get it".

    Same for my boys.

After a LOT of trial and error, I figured out that my babies simply loathe being spoon-fed. So we're doing all finger foods, and they have a lot more fun with that.

It is very frustrating...one of mine got it instantly, the other took at least a month. Now both can't stuff themselves with anything & everything fast enough!

Jack didn't want anything to do with it and would spit practically everthing out if he opened his mouth for it, for about 3 weeks. At first James was really good or at least better about the whole thing than his brother but even now after a month and a half he still has days where he just won't eat that much. Jack is now a supereater and I feel like he would eat all day if I let him, but somedays James still prefers his mommy or a bottle and will eat very little solid food. Just keep at it and I wouldn't worry because they are still getting almost all of their nutrients from formula or nursing.
