How important is it to give them yogurt?

My babies are 10 months old. A few weeks ago I gave them yogurt for the first time - well I attemoped anyway. After 2 spoonfuls they both started crying and gagging. The gagging I understand becuase it's a new food, but crying? So I said, that's it, I'm not giving them yogurt if it is going to upset them that much. They'd never cried at any new foods before.

So I chalked it up to the fact that my husband and I absolutely hate yogurt - just the thought of it makes me ill, and I figured that they don't like it either. And hubby and I turned out ok without eating yogurt so no big deal :icon_biggrin:

Coincidentally that evening they both started vomiting and diarrhea sorry TMI. My first reaction was it was that darn yogurt!

But then they had a low grade temp, and per the pediatrician they had a stomach virus. They actually had it for nearly a week - two 10 month olds with diarrhea for a week is so not fun!

So I feel like I should be giving the yogurt another try at this point but am hesitant after the last experience. I know the benefits of yogurt for babies, but what will be so wrong if I don't give it to them?

    Thanks for any thoughts. :)

I hated yogurt too, then I tried Danone Creamy. It doesn't have that weird yogurt taste. It is like a dessert. When I say go choose a dessert - she chooses that. My babes love it. At snack time one isn't enough for them. I highly recommend you try this kind next time. Plus, even if they don't like yogurt now, you should keep offering it now and then because their tastes change. After all one day my kid wants three helpings of daddy's macaroni and the next day she says - you know I don't like that!

I didn't give mine yogurt until 15 months (and they love it). There really isn't any reason to give it at a specific age. Lactose intolerant kids don't eat it at all. But, like the PP said, their tastes change so just because they didn't enjoy the first try doesn't mean they won't love it next time. It goes the other way too. Mine used to LOVE sweet potatoes and now they like them maybe half of the time.

I started giving them yogurt at 9 months and they absolutely love it. I give to them almost everyday either as a meal or with a meal or as a snack. There have been MANY foods that either both of them didn't like or just one of them. For example, a month ago, I tried cottage cheese. They were both gagging so I said, "ok, forget that." Well, I thought I'd give it another try, so a couple of days ago I bought it again and guess what...They liked it! Go figure. I guess their tastebuds just weren't ready for it that day. This has actually happened with a couple of foods. I would say it's not a big deal if they NEVER like yogurt. There are pleanty of other calcium rich foods that you could give them. However, I wouldn't give up on any food that they don't like the first or even second time. They are ready for certain foods when they are ready and who knows what's behind their likes and dislikes.

BTW I'm sorry your little ones are sick. I hope they feel better soon.

One big benefit of yogurt is that the bacteria can help balance their systems out after a stomach bug.
It was also the only dairy product Rosalie could have once for about 2 weeks, when she was having trouble getting over a bug. I liked knowing she was getting some dairy at least, KWIM?

I love yogurt now and eat it daily, but I hated it as a child, too.

We tried yogurt tonight for the first time. They loved it with their sweet potatoes. We used the Stoneybrook Organic YoBaby. The flavor was apple.

Thanks for all the replies. I will probably wait awhile and try again. :)

Mom of one plus two - I will definitely try the Dannon Creamy this time!
