I see posters that say their twins are 4 weeks early or 6 weeks early. Are they talking early from a 40 week due date or a 38 week due date. My doc says they will be full term at 38 weeks and wont let me go any further, so would they then be considered two weeks early?

My boys were born at 35 weeks 4 days and they were considered just over a month early- so that's going from a 40 week due date. My ob told me that the average was around 36-37 weeks for twins and that they considered 37 weeks full term for twins. So, yes, if you delivered at 38, they would be 2 weeks early (or at least how I understand it to be.)

Yep, when people talk about how early babies were they're going from the normal 40-week due date.
Mine were 2 weeks early--they were born at 37w6d via scheduled induction. Just 3 hours short of 38 weeks so I usually just round up. ;)

My boys were born at exactly 35 wks. We (dr's also) always said that they were 5 wks early so I believe it all goes by 40 weeks even though twins are considered full-term at 37 wks.

my girls were born at 34 weeks & my doc considers them to be 6 weeks early when adjusting for milestones, so he goes from a 40 week due date. from what i understand, babies born after 36 weeks or so aren't adjusted even though they're technically 4 weeks early.

My twins were 35w 2 days. We never really used adjusted ages and neither did any of our pedis.

As my dr. stated.. a 37 week gest. age baby is still only 37 weeks old. (Dh was trying to convince him that 37 weeks was full-term for twins). I had a scheduled c-section at 38 weeks, however I was in labor when it happened. So, 2 weeks early from a 40 week due date.

My doctor was shooting for 40 weeks, so when I say 4 weeks early I mean they were born at 36 weeks. I developed severe pre-eclampsia very rapidly and they were worried about me and the babies.

My girls were born at exaclty 30 weeks. The Dr said they were 10 weeks early. Even though I was told twins are considered to be full term at 37 weeks, you just go by the normal 40 weeks.

Go from full 40 weeks---my girls were 8 weeks early (32 weeks) and adjusted for milestones that way for the 1st 2 years.

However-- if they are born after 37/38 weeks or over 5 1/2 lbs my Pedi does not adjust-- there is a huge maturity spurt aroudn 36/37 weeks that makes many babies born after 37 weeks able to go home right away and no NICU.

Mine came home at 36 & 37 weeks gestation ( 4 and 5 weeks in NICU)-- that is when they said many babies w/o a complicated NICU stay are ready---though it is not unheard of to go to Due Date or beyond.

My twins were born at 36 weeks, no NICU time, but they still consider them premies. It does not make sense to me.

Mine were 37 wks, 1 day. My doctor never called them early. I had to have a c/s because I ran out of room and they weren't going to have enough space for the aminiotic fluid. I was not near labor and could've gone 40 weeks if I'd been taller. No NICU and I have never adjusted their age, although I believe they would technically be considered 3 weeks early.

My boys were 38 weeks exactly, but the dr’s never mentioned them being “early.” Essentially they were just treated as two full-term singletons. Max was 6.1 lbs and Levi was 7.1 lbs. My older son also arrived at 38 weeks and was treated as full-term. Hope that helps! :)

    Congratulations!

They always go by 40 weeks due date - whether they are singletons or multiples. With that said, like pps said, most twins born after 37 weeks are considered term. Mine were born at approximately 34 weeks - 6 weeks early via emergency C-section - both over 5 lbs and didn't spend any NICU time at all and Pediatrician has never adjusted their age. So I guess it's different for everyone but, as long as you are as comfortable as you can be, hang in there for as long as possible. Good luck!

Mine were 7 weeks early, born at 33wks 4 days. Our pedi always goes by their adjusted age and rounds it to 2 months early.

My OB said the same thing. Mine were born at 37w3d as he, the OB, had a different date to me and thought I was 37w (he was wrong but it didnt bother me waiting for 3 more days!). People calculate from 40 weeks, so mine were almost 3 weeks early.

Mine were born 36w 1 day via scheduled csection. No NICU and no adjusted age. When people ask if they were early, I just say they were born at 36 weeks and let them decide if its early or not. Since they didnt have NICU time and they didnt have any developmental delays or any issues, and I know there are a lot of babies born really early... IDK. Technically, they were 4 weeks early though.

FWIW, my Doc wanted me to make it to 37 weeks, but they felt my babygirl wasnt 'thriving' en utero, so thats why they took them early.

My boys were born at 36 weeks, 1 day, so considered by all docs we've ever seen to be 4 weeks early. We don't usually adjust their age, but the ped says not to worry if they are a little behind on hitting their milestones since they were early.

Mine were born at 31 weeks 6 days so I just say they were 8 weeks early based off the 40 week due date. GL with the rest of your pregnancy!!

Mine were born at 36 weeks 6 days. We had an amnio done to check for lung maturity but my Peri also considered 37 weeks full term for twins.

Thank goodness I had a bag started of things to bring to the hospital! I had No idea it was the day until my water broke.

    Full-term for any baby--whether a singleton or multiples--is 37 weeks or more.
So any baby born before 37 weeks is technically pre-term, i.e. premature.

Here's how I understand it: When people say "twins are full-term at 37w" that doesn't mean singletons aren't full-term then; what that usually means is that doctors are often willing to go ahead and deliver twins at 37-38 weeks, whereas with a singleton they'd usually wait till 40 weeks unless there's a medical reason not to. But regardless, the development of the baby is still basically the same. There are some studies that indicate twins' lungs mature a little faster than singletons, but the data is not conclusive. A 37-weeker is a 37-weeker, no matter how many other babies it's sharing a womb with. ;)

Like others have said, i use a 40 week due date to determine "how early" they are...I had mine at 36 weeks. Our pedi doesn't adjust, but the NICU clinic which follows Jake did adjust for the first 2 years (not sure why).

What I was told and what is evident from most of the folks on this board is that generally twins develop faster in utero than singletons...triplets faster than twins, quads faster than triplets..and so on. The idea being that multiples are "under stress in utero" and it accelerates their devleopment.

Mine were 37w5d. There is actually an interesting article about babies born between 37w-38w in Today's Parent magazine. It talks about breastfeeding difficulties in these babes as they don't fully have the suck reflex but they aren't early enough to really need any other interventions. It was enlighting to me anyway. :)
