How early did your cervix shorten compared to when you gave birth? Mine has been long and closed the whole time and it seems to be staying that way but I dont want to freak out if that changes anytime soon so i am just trying to get an idea of how early this should happen with a twin pregnancy

I had preterm labor starting at 30 weeks but with bedrest it didn't shorten my cervix. I stayed on bedrest from 30-36 weeks. When I went off my meds I went into labor. While the cervix is definatly importnat there are other issues as well. At that point I went to the specialist a couple times a week for monitoring of heartbeats but I don't think they even measured my cervix anymore. At first it was every 2 weeks.

I don't have a great answer but that was my experience.

I had PTL at 24 weeks, and was 2cm dialated and 60% effaced. I went on bedrest and made it to 37 weeks.

With my singles I always started to shorten and efface quite early but with "pelvic rest" and modified bed rest I made it to 37 weeks. The Dr. just thinks my body starts to get ready earlier than it should. So with the twins they are monitoring me very closely. You could start to shorten and even dilate and still go weeks. Good luck! You are doing great!

they noticed my cervix had shortened at a routine u/s at 27 weeks (went from 4 cm to 2 cm) - i was put on modified bedrest. my girls were born at 34w1d. i'm pretty sure the reason my cervix shortened at that point & then didn't do anything else after was because of hopping around on crutches for a week at 25 weeks (but that's a whole other long story).

At my last appointment the tech measured my cervix at 5cm. I said, "that's long, right?" And she said, "your cervix is a mile and a half long." I took this as being a good thing, meaning the babies are willing to hang out a little longer. But now it sort of sounds like things could change quickly??? I'm gonna keep doing what I'm doing, start working on my hospital bag, and we'll see how it goes. :D

My cervix never shortened....they induced me at 38w5d and it took 21 hours of labouring and a c-section. Count your lucky stars that its still nice and long!!!!!!

Mine never did either. I opted for a c-section rather than induction at 38 weeks and 2 days as I'd had absolutely NO cervical changes whatsoever!

30 weeks mine went from 4 to 1.9 cm. Then it got as low as 1.7, I think. I stopped most activity and it went back up to around 2.0. I carried them until 37 w 5 d.

Mine went from 5.3 at 26 weeks to 4.(something) by 29 weeks... I dont think they will check it again till my appointment with my peri but I was told (when it was 5.3) that was in the 99% - so no real change here yet

I don't think they have checked mine yet... they check me for dilation and measure my uterus, but I don't think they've checked my cervix. How do they and when do they start?

    scottyswifey -

They have likely been measuring your cervix length (not dilation or effacement) every time you've had an ultrasound thus far. My peri and OB stopped measuring cervix length around 30 weeks.

I am currently 28wks and change  They've never checked cervical length (They do that vaginally right??) or anything til fri when I was having contrax. When they did we find I'm 2cm dilated and 70% effaced and they can feel the babies head. I have no idea when my cervix shortened or even if it was ever long cause now it's nothing. So two steroid shots for their lungs and meds to stop contrax and I'm at home on bedrest for now. They don't think I will make it to 34wks but we will see. We live 1hr from the hospital so they aren't real thrilled with that so they might actually admit me :headbang: til they arrive.
Not much help for your question but that's where I'm at now.

k2daho- My ob has been checking for dilation vaginally. The only measurements they've ever gave me from u/s were the babies... Do they sometimes check and not tell you? Or are they just not too concerned?

At least in my experience they did always measure along with everything else that they measure (either with the regular ultrasound or transvaginal u/s) and measure, but they never mentioned it unless I asked about it. I'm guessing it's one of those things that they don't bother mentioning if it's not a problem.

Last week I went into visit the dr. after a weekend of getting the room ready and being on my feet the whole weekend. Come to find out it caused my cervix to soften up some. I was at 28.5 weeks so just to be cautious we did a fFt test this week and everything came back negative. I got put on modified bed rest until the girls arrive now.

At 24 weeks my cervix was 3.6 cm, and on Monday at 28 weeks, my cervix was 2.1 cm and funneling. I have been put on bedrest for the duration of the pregnancy.
