How do you take their temperature?

I know rectal temps are very accurate but after age 1 are they too old for that? The nurse at my doctors office suggested under the arm and add a degree. My girls wiggle so much and hate that. Does anyone have a ear thermometer and are they accurate? Or any other tips for taking temps?
    Thanks.

I use under the arm and add a degree. If they are wiggly I just hold them down. I have never used a rectal and don't think I ever will. I, personally, don't like the ear or the temporal scan ones. They don't seem accurate at all. I have tried both. I returned the temporal scan one. I know the normal ear temps can vary from person to person and between ears. You should take it several times while the child is healthy to get their individual normal reading. My best method for testing for a fever is simply recognizing that my child is hot. Then I try the underarm. I bought a thermometer that gives out a reading pretty quick, which is ideal for little ones.

We also use the temporal thermometer and love it. It was introduced to us at an out-of-town clinic when the girls were 1 and we immediately went out and got our own. :)

We use the Exergen Temporal Thermometer. It's super quick and is pretty accurate.

This is what we use too. I love it! This is the exact one our peds office uses as well, and they got it at Walmart too. That is why I got it.

That looks like a pretty cool thermometer. Wow.

We use the ear thermometer, and each time I've used it has been accurate. {We went to the docs after and they got the same reading} I have never done the rectal reading either, I felt too bad for them.
