How do you stop this?

I recently took the trays off of our highchairs and started putting the boys at the table. Well, now Gabe does THIS! Luckily there is a couch behind him to stop him from going all the way over. But now that he has figured out this fun activity he is trying to do it at my moms house, the restaurant etc. Did you have a kid that did this and how did you break the habit?

    Thanks

Yup my both BOTH try to do that. I just make sure if I walk way they are not close enough to table or anything else to help them TIP the chair (included eachother!) B)

My boys both discovered that little trick too, much to my dismay. I just always have to make sure they are far enough away from the table that they can't reach. Then I end up bending over like a pretzel to feed them. Ah, fun! Just when you think you're one step ahead of them, they figure out a new way to scare the bejeezus out of you!

On another note - I noticed you are currently a surrogate. I just wanted to say that is such an awesome thing and congrats to you and the parents. I am pregnant now, but would love to do that for someone else when my kids are older.

Ali did that once and went all the way over onto her back!! My MIL was screaming! (that part is kinda funny - and since she's ok, I can laugh!! ) But I would tell him not to do it and then tell him the next time he does it, he gets his tray back. He'll get the picture after a while.....

I would tell him not to do it and then pull his chair away from the table immediately the next time he does it. (Just moved 6" or so away where he can't reach his plate and can't reach the table with his feet.) Then given him a few minutes to scream about the injustice, LOL, and then offer him another chance to sit up at the table, this time saying that if he puts his feet on the table again, he has to go back to using the tray. (If they were older, I'd say that the rule should be that dinner is over after the second time he puts his feet up, but since they are still pretty young, I'd make it be that he has to use the tray away from the table.)

Yeah...I tend to be kind of a hard-@ss about those sorts of things, but I also find that kind of stuff tends to get nipped in the bud pretty quickly if you just take a hard line on it from the beginning.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. This is exactly how I would handle the situation (and have). In our house, Ben tried that once, and he was pulled back from the table (at which he "screamed about the injustice"), and then he rejoined us at the table. He hasn't done it again. But if he did, I would do the same thing or just dismiss him from the table since he is old enough to understand that what he is doing is a total no no.

Our boy's do that as well. I put two very heavy chairs behind their seats. I would probally put one between the baby chair and your couch. Good luck!

I agree with other pps. First warn him, and then put the tray back on his chair or just pull him away from the table.

All my kids have gone thru stages of putting their feet on the table... but our chairs didn't fall backwards. Hadas would always get out of her high-chair... so she spent the least amount of time using it and I finally just go rid of it. She sits at a small kids table (IKEA) and is quite happy.

Mine do this too. I tell them not to do and then pull them away from the table so they can't do it again.
