how do you know?

This will probably sound really stupid, but how /when did you know when your kids were fraternal/identical? My OB/GYN said he was unable to tell throughout pregnancy. When the babies were born, they looked quite different, so we assumed they were fraternal. Now they look more and more alike each day. I always tell people they are fraternal, but somedays I am not sure.

Did you have two placentas or one? One placenta means for sure identical, two placentas means could be identical or fraternal.

I had two placentas and when my girls were born we thought for sure fraternal, now they are almost four months old and they look more and more alike. We decided to do a DNA test to know for sure one way or the other.

I live in Canada and we have a doctor here that is doing twin zygosity studies. I contacted her and she mailed me the cheek swabs and I will know the results in a few weeks.

When I had my C-section I had the placentas sent off to the lab to figure out if they were identical or fraternal. You can always do a zygosity test to know for sure. There is a link to Proactive Genetics in the top right hand corner of the website that does them.

I think the only way to know for sure at this point as other posters have mentioned is to have the DNA testing done.

Do they have the same blood type? That's a way to determine if they are faternal.

What do other people think? Can you post any pictures?

Oh my gosh - I could have posted this! They had very distinct appearances when they were born, but more and more are looking alike. I never found out how many placentas I had though. I need to contact the hospital and find out.

If they shared a placenta, then they're identical. If there was 2 placentas, but they have the same blood type, there's a small chance that they're identical. As the pp said if they have the same blood type (and 2 placentas) then the only way to know for sure is a DNA test. I would do it- it's the #1 question they'll get for the rest of their lives and to be able to answer with certainty is great! They'll be so happy you did it!

You could also post pictures- people around here have a great success rate at determining zygosity! Good luck whatever you decide to do!! :)
