how do you handle?

Saturday evening we went to dinner. Afterwards, I took Wyatt to the van to feed him. I was covered up but some guy pulls in, asks how old the baby is, gets his to-go order then stands beside my van staring at me. I was so embarrassed. Why would he be so rude? How do you handle this? Not a very good first time experience of public feeding.

How rude!! Why in the world did he even think that was acceptable? I have BF four children and have never had anything like that happen. Don't let it discourage you, it will probably never happen again. :)

Sounds like he was just clueless - he probably thought it was a sweet sight to see you nursing your baby, and didn't realize that a NORMAL person would give you guys a little privacy! I hope it doesn't happen again.

That is so odd! I don't know what I would do! Maybe ask him if he's thirsty? LOL - just kidding!

I wish I had an answer for you. I recently had something similar happen, but iw was with a woman. I was feeding Carys at the park in a gazibo and this woman (another dance class mom) came over and said hi and then was staring at me. So, I told her that I was in there because I was feeding the baby and she said "Yeah, I can tell" and then stared some more. I honestly didn't know what to say. It was very awkward. I can't imagine if it were a man staring at me!

"I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were a national geographic reporter...do you need the correct spelling of my name for your "bobbies on parade" article?"

This is what I was thinking (or hoping <_< ) as well. While it IS rude and would make me uncomfortable too, I could totally see my father-in-law doing something like this. He's seen his wife nurse 5 children, and I could just see him staring and thinking sweet thoughts about the baby (He's not a lech at all  ) without realizing that he was staring. Some people (like my FIL) are just clueless!

Evidently a guy did this at the airport once. I didn't notice, but my son noticed DH giving someone a major "look," and asked why. It was DH's opinion this guy was ogling, not basking in the wonder of nature. He backed down. DH has some scary-looking eyebrows when he scowls. :D

I guess you could say, "Do you need a camera?"

My guess is that he didn't realize you were nursing. Some men are really that clueless.

It reminds me of one day when we went to a company picnic. DH pulled his pickup in next to a car that was occupied. He suddenly pulled out again and parked in another spot. I asked him what was wrong with the first spot and he told me he just saw his coworker's wife's boob... she was nursing in the front seat. I laughed out loud at him. Of course, this was before kids for us so I wonder if he'd be fazed at all now.
