How do you handle twin birthdays?

We always do a theme for our girls birthday, as most probably do. For 1 year it was Princess & the Pea, for 2 years it was Whales, for 3 years it was Blue's Clues. This year I am having a tough time. Mainly because of the Cake. I always make a themed cake and in the past, they were into the same things so it wasn't a big deal. However this year one of my girls wants a Cars cake (like the cartoon) and the other wants a farm cake. I'd prefer that they would agree on what they wanted but I guess that's kids for you :) So I am probably just going to do 2 cakes. I'd feel bad giving 1 what they wanted and telling the other they had to go along with it.

So how do you guys handle birthdays? Do you require your kids choose the same/similar things? Or do you just let them choose whatever they want?

We usually do two cakes. This year we have a Hello Kitty/Batman theme.

I'd do two cakes! Although I'm totally doing only one this year, because we're not having a party... I just asked them to make it pretty and I'll pop some Mickey Mouse figurines on top.

We usually do 2 cakes too. They both want My Little Pony this year but different colours. I figure that if they were singletons with separate birthdays they would get their own cake, so I don't mind having 2 cakes.

We do two cakes. It's fun for the kids to select their favorite flavor and design.

You could have Lightning McQueen and Mater on a farm. They go tractor tipping in the first movie, don't they? Or you could do cupcakes... half in each theme.

As for what I do, I either just choose my own theme that I know they'll both like, or I figure out a way to combine them (or I talk them into something they hadn't thought of, lol). But I've only ever done 1 cake.

That is how I feel. It's not their fault they are twins and I don't think it's fair to make them have to share a cake/theme.

Luckily-they always have the same theme(b/b). Their first year, they got individual smash cakes and I had two big ole cakes with a picture of them on it. Too.much.cake. Lol! Their second birthday was sesame street so cupcakes. Their third was Mickey Mouse so I just got a Costco cake and put Mickey Mouse figurines on it. This year it was pirate themed(awesome!!), and I did make two cakes-a treasure chest and a ship. So cool! They loved them!

Not sure what birthday #5 has in store for us, but they are talking about having it somewhere other than home...

We do two cakes, actually we have 3 cakes because my oldest son's birthday is 4 days before the twins birthday. So I have one party so my out of town family doesn't have to make two trips to our house.

Year one I made two #1 cakes, one pink and purple, one blue and purple. Year two I made Lightning McQueen and Sally cakes. Year three I'm doing Mickey and Minnie cakes for them.

As someone said if they were singleton's they'd each have their own "theme" for their party. And since I usually make them a cake on their actual birthday too, I'm going to have like 5 cakes in the space of a week!

If there was really some huge aversion to sharing a "theme" or if it were impossible to combine themes, I could maybe see making two cakes. But especially with two girls, I just haven't seen the need. It's not like any child eats the entire thing. They have a piece and then the family/friends share the rest. Why have twice as much leftovers?

But with 6 kids, I'm all about simplicity... so maybe my views are skewed.

What we did this year was have a large cake with the theme for all the guests (Sesame Street), and then I made each of the boys their own small cake to put their candles on and blow out. Part of the reason for that, though, is that they are soy intolerant, so I had to make their cake and icing from scratch, but didn't feel up to doing a design for the larger cake (I'm not at ALL artistic and it would have been a disaster to try and do Elmo!)

If they really wanted two different themes, I would try to do it, but I hope we will be able to do one most of the time since they are both boys and so far like the same things. But I guess we will see as the years go on.

We've done two cakes since my girls were three. At four, they both wanted princess theme, but one wanted belle and the other wanted cinderella, so I did one big castle cake and then they each got a small princess cake for their own. But every year since then, two cakes. I make my own as well, so it does take extra time, but they love having their very own with the flavor they want and the character they want and it's always something different for both. This year one wanted a rock star cake that was cherry and the other wanted a Hello Kitty that was strawberry. It's fun and now that they are older, they actually put a lot of thought into the flavor and theme for their cake.

I think I've had it easy - we've always just done cupcakes for their birthday parties. This year Cricket would like a princess theme and Piper would like a superhero theme, so I will probably just get decorations for both and scatter them about!

two cakes... Year one was just fun pink and blue cakes. year two was monkey themed with pink/blue accents - actually I made them each a small pyrex dish cake - maybe 4" wide. then just cupcakes. This last year I did a butterfly cake for my dd and fish for my ds...

anyway, it is fun to see their personalities and their eyes sparkle when what they asked for comes to life on a cake. I wouldn't do "more" cake than we needed for leftovers, I'd go for two smaller cakes, or medium cakes if you're worried about that. But I will say that cake freezes! yummy!! and you can heat it up at the bottom of your icecream bowl later!

this year my son keeps referencing a "giant" cake - probably means some type of superhero, and my dd a "choo choo train" like her daddy asked for this fall! we'll see what they get in a few months. But, yep it's fun to make something fun for them.
