I've been putting flouride in their bottles. I recently read you shouldn't do that because milk prevents the absorbtion or something like that. Is this true????

Our pedi suggested using nursery water to make their formula so that is what I do.

I make their formula with nursery water, per the pedi. They will go off of formula pretty soon, so then we'll have to start using the supps.

I have chosen not to give my girls Flouride. I had my water tested to make sure it doesn't contain Flouride and I use Flouride free toothpaste. My pedi wanted to give my girls Flouride drops and before I did I did some research and found some things that I don't like. One of the things I found was that Flouride can affect the throyid and leads to obesity in children. Here are a couple websites I found:

    http://www.all-natural.com/fleffect.html

    http://www.fluoridealert.org/health/

The American Dental Association also released a statement saying not to give water that contains Flouride to a child under the age of one. Here is a link to a statement from the ADA

    http://www.ada.org/prof/resources/position...ide_infants.asp

Just a few things for you to think about. Theres a lot of info on the ADA website.

I actually do give the flouride drops. We are on well water & I talked to my dentist & there are only certain areas around here that have flouride in the wells. Plus, we don't normally use the tap water for them & buy distilled. I also asked about just using nursery water for their bottles & she said not knowing how much is in there she didn't recommend it, since it is easy to give them too much and that can harm their teeth. (Flouride stains are really gross.)

So, I just keep the bottle by the changing table and give them the dropper full when I change their 1st diaper of the day. They both seem to like the taste just fine, so they take it really well. DD, actually, gets SUPER excited when she sees the dropper.....it's like candy for her!

(The super long insert that they give you at the pharmacy says something about not drinking milk for a certain amount of time after giving the flouride...I can't remember, I think it's an hour or 2)

I just squirt the drops in their mouths. I don't give it on days when they've had juice (mixed with water) or water in a bottle though.

I give them theirs straight from the dropper. You are supposed to avoid eating and drinking (including water) for 30 minutes afterward in order to aid in the absorption. The directions, our dentist, and pediatrician all told us that it is best taken at least 2 hours before or after taking dairy products. Otherwise their will be a decrease in the effectiveness. Thus they get theirs after their morning snack which is right before their morning nap.

Its added to our tap water at the station. The source of our city water is a glacier fed lake in a national park (hence protected from major pollutants). Its super-clean and our pedi recommended it over any bottled water we could buy here. [IMG]
