on kids at this young of an age? I am curious because mine need to be tested as a follow up type thing. I am not really worried but I can't imagine for the life of me how this will go! Or even how accurate it could be? Anyone who has gone through this, can you let me know.

Super Easy. I was worried too. What they had me do was sit with him/her on my lap in an enclosed room with one window for the doctor to watch. In the room you can see different stuffed animals and at different moments one animal would make music or talk. They could tell by how long it took your child to look and where he/she looked how their hearing is. Sometimes the animals would play very low music and sometimes it was high pitched. Another test they did just required them to put a plastic piece in their ear for about 10 seconds. No sound or anything, something to do with the ear drum and pressure. Neither of mine seemed to even notice. I was very impressed with the whole procedure actually. Good Luck!

My girls had one by EI- they put a an earpiece in the ear and it bounces (??) sound waves to measure hearing...if it came back off they woudl send them to a specialist. Both my girls were OK.

Ditto this.. I was glad DH was with me, so he could hold the other while we had the test - because they wouldn't let her go in with me. The one time I had to take them both without DH, the other stayed in the room with the audiologist - but I could tell she was a major distraction (she was 20 months).

We only had my son's hearing tested and they did this as well. I was quite impressed as well. Once they were able to get him to focus and stop talking, it went quite well.

The ENT put a small instrument very similar to what they use to look into the ear in her ear and measured the sound waves bouncing off. He had to do it a couple of times before he had an accurate reading because my girl was being too noisy  but it was very quick and non intrusive. dh held her and I was given a monkey puppet to entertain her with and it was done in a couple of minuted.
Good luck with the testing. hope everything is just fine for your little one.

Sarah had one at 22 months, and it was exactly like Natalie described.

We are actually having another one on Monday, so I'll let you know if it's any different! (Sarah passed the one at 22 months, but when we had her EI eval for speech last week, they did another tympanogram -- that's the test that axpan described -- and one of hers had an abnormal result. I don't know whether that's a really bad thing or just a sign of possible ear infection? Anyway, they wanted to do another hearing screening.)
