Our pedi said we can introduce cereal with one of our guys...he said 1 tbsp and make it soupy..but I'm wondering ..does this substitute a whole bottle, part of a bottle, or in addition to his bottle? I thought it was in addition but now I'm not sure...

I just started and my boys will be 4.5 weeks on Sunday. So, I have been doing it 2 weeks now. I do mine right before bath time, then bottle and then off to bed. Right now it is just so they can learn to eat and they won't be getting too many calories out of it. Let the fun begine!

In addition to... I would give the bottle first, and then about 1/2 hour later try the cereal. See how they like the soupy consistency. If they seem not that interested in it, you cna make a little thicker and keep trying it. [IMG]

    Good luck!

Yes, I agree...the milk added to the cereal is "in addition to." We made their first few meals really soupy and it was an absolute mess. Then I made it thicker and it was both neater and they gobbled it up! We started cereal at 6 months, but I think they were ready sooner.

Another vote for "in addition to".

They may not finish the entire bottle. I would start with the soupy cereal and end with the bottle or breast. They may be fuller sooner, but that is fine.

I'm exclusively bf-ing, but our pedi said to feed as usual first, then do the cereal shortly after. So bottle, then cereal.

    In addition to!

If they don't like soupy make it a bit thicker, mine like applesauce consistency.

It is in addition to....Dont forget that they get all of their nutritional needs met by their bottles for at least the 1st 6 months...so adding food now is a bonus...let them have their boittles, then stagger it a little (we wait an hour or 2) and then give them cereal. It is messy. Our boys would never eat the soupy stuff...they went straight for a thicker goop... [IMG] Have fun!

look at the calories of the cereal...

breastmilk and formula are 20 calories per ounce on average.... so -- if cereal is 40 calories, then it could replace 2 ounces of milk.

    Does tha tmake sense?
