How different are your di/di twins?

Other than both being boys and both fussy atm, my two are so different! They hardly look like brothers, let alone twins. Alex takes after his daddy - straight dark hair, long eyelashes, large head, ear shape, etc. Alex was 6lb1oz at 33w6d birth, following his dad's pattern of big babies (DH was term at 9lb10oz!) Sam takes after me with wispy light brown hair, average size head. I was just over 6lb when I was born at term and Sam was 3lb11oz at 33w6d birth. They have such different personalities emerging as well. Alex is happy and easily self-entertained. Sam is very thoughtful and needs lots of holding.

They are adorable! You might not see it, but I think they look a lot alike!

My twins have very different personalities as well. Emma was very easy going as a baby, Jake VERY high maintenance! Now though, they have kind of changed. She tends to be more whiny, and he's the one telling her to 'stop crying!'.

Just like the PP, I too think your little guys look alike. They are super adorable too. I used to think the same thing about our daughters, especially since there has always been a weight difference. But, as our little one puts on more weight, we're starting to see her resemble her sister more and more. Especially in pictures.

Their personalities are quite different though. Madison is our spitfire and Kelsey is our quiet, pensive one.

I say the same thing about my girls and they are mono/di identicals! BK is laid back and easy going while Aurora is a drama queen! Plus, there's the big size difference.

Good heavens! Are you sure they're not identical?? I think they are but the size difference is throwing us.

    Blood types??

That is an INCREDIBLE size difference... like TTTS size difference!

    Can we see more pics?

    Thanks!! Cuties!

I was thinking the exact same thing! They look a lot alike to me. My boys are di/di identicals and look very different to me too. Others think they look the same. We have just a pound weight difference, but they carry it differently.

My boys were very laid back and happy during the first year. They were very much the same. This year though, they have started showing big personality differences. Ryan is very affectionate, yet aggressive and Jake is clingy and whiny. It's amazing how different and similar twins can be!

They are different people. :) You will see tons of differences between them over the months to come, and would even if they were identical. We MoMs are like that. :)

My guys look nothing alike. Complete strangers can tell them apart in about 2 seconds. Even without the other one around from then on out. No one who has ever seen them asks if they are identical - more people ask skeptically if they are even twins. One looks like me, one looks like DH. One has noticibly huge blue eyes, the other has smaller green eyes, but GIANT eye lashes. One has a slender build (and I don't just mean weight - I mean actual SHAPE). The other I hate to say it, but he has my butt (let's call it ample and curvy shall we?). One has long legs (or a high waist), the other has a longer torso and short little legs. One weighs 3lbs more than the other. The other is an inch taller. One has long slender feet, while the other has cute fat baby hams. One is wearing 18 month clothes and size 5 shoes. The other is starting to fill out 24mo clothes, but could still wear most size 3 shoes. One army crawled at 5 months, and did a classic crawl at 6 months after practicing and trying constantly. The other just up and crawled at 6 months the day after he learned how to get on all 4s. One was walking at 9 months, and is now running. The other took his first few steps this week (at 13 mo!) One signs and talks constantly. He also clearly understands the word no, and lots of simple instructions. The other rarely ever talks, almost never signs, and doesn't follow commands whether because he doesn't understand and just chooses not to is still up for debate. One loves to snuggle and always gives me hugs. The other will hug for 2 seconds and then has better things to do. One eats right handed, the other eats left. One eats with a pincher grip (thumb and forefinger) the other gets things in his palm and smears it into this mouth. And I could go on, and on...

They are just day and night different. I think it is actually a good thing, because it helps everyone remember that are two different individuals who are going to do things differently and at different paces. And that's okay. We actually did a fun exercise when they turned one - superlatives (you can search for it on TS). You have a long list of traits (best hair, most outgoing, most talkative), and both you and DH (and anyone else who spends time with them) fills it out. It surprised both that we agreed on some, and that we disagreed on some, too. It was great to reminisce about why we each felt that way.

ETA: mine have different head shapes, too. At first we thought maybe it because of their time in utero, but it isn't changing. One has a long, narrow head, the others is very round. And one of mine was easy going from Day 1 - when ever you get to me. The other was high-maintenance from the start - first with colic, then with reflux, and now he's just a high maintenance baby.

My OB thought TTTS too but all the tests showed that wasn't an issue. I'm quite sure that they're di/di because of all the u/s I had after my IVF. :) In fact, at my first u/s, my doc was 95% sure that the tiny second sac would be a vanishing twin ...

Okay, now I'm confused - I think I used the wrong term. :) My boys are two fertilized eggs implanting seperately. What is that called?

I think it would just be fraternal di-di. Di-Di just means they have their own sac and placental. Fraternal twins are always di-di but identical can be di-di, mono-di or mono-mono. The only way to know for sure if di-di are fraternal is usually dna or if they have different blood types. TTTS only occurs in Mono-di pregnancies so I'm wondering why they would have been checking you for it?? My mon-di boys have completely different personalities.

My boys are as different as night and day as well. They don't look like brothers let alone twins. One is 5lbs bigger. One has brown hair and brown eyes. The other has red hair and blue eyes. One is calm. One is frantic. No one believes they are twins when I'm out with them.

DH and I grew up in Illinois. Besides, I think my MIL would sue for custody if we didn't raise them to be Cubs fans. :D

Have you ever been accused of getting pregnant by two men or some joke about mixed up sperm at the fertility clinic? I'm not looking forward to those jokes. <_<

Alright..................................... Finally, something interesting to think about for a minute................................

They ARE identical and they are MONO di and they did have TTTS! (my totally, absolutely NON professional opinion only, of course..)

I'm no doctor but WHOAH. Those babies are in the same sac!

    AND they are identical!!!

Did you see a perinatologist??? Do you have any VERY EARLY ultrasound photos??? Just so I can prove myself wrong..

I also did IVF and had mono di identical boys so it DOES happen.,

Did you do a five day transfer??? Yes. Just guessing..

    FUN!! come back to us!

WE love this stufff. Do they have the same blood type?

I did a three-day transfer (was supposed to reduce chance of twins ;)). They were in two sacs. I dug up some u/s pics from my NT scan at 12 wks --

All I can say is that told me there were two seperate sacs. They checked for TTTS because I have a very cautious doctor. :) I had a u/s checking for it at around 30 wks and they saw two seperate and normal blood supplies.

Isn't this wild? I love it!!

You're TOTALLY going to have to do a DNA test!!

If you did a 3 day then you can have two sacs and 2 placentas and STILL have them be ID!

I did a five day so mine had to be monodi to have identicals.

Did you have one or 2 placentas??

Aren't you glad you started this thread?? LOL.

    Do keep us posted!!!

    Thank you!! :)

The first picture you posted...I can't see, it's no longer available. But I think the girls are on to something. I would definitely call your Dr. and ask about blood types, and the pathology report of the placenta. If they are di/di and same blood type you'll want to test. My boys are di/di identical. www.dnasolutions.com is the cheapest I found on the internet at $99. A few of us have used them and they are really professional. All you do is swab the boys' cheeks. And send away the swabs. Easy!

Nope, they were both pretty red. :) I had that u/s which showed that both boys had their own seperate supply and no feeders going off.

Two placentas, but they were "fused" I'm not sure what DH would think about a DNA test ... I have the feeling he'd think it was a waste.

You should only do the dna if they have the same blood type. Do you know if they do? In the end it really doesn't matter becasue you have two beautiful healthy babies :D
