How did your pacifier kids react?

I'm not taking it away yet, I see no reason to do so. Around 18 months I would like to try to give it only at naps and bedtime and long trips (as someone suggested). Today, my dd was just having these little outbursts of tears. She would just start crying out of nowhere without any visible reason as to what's wrong. So finally I thought maybe she wants her pacifier. She still only cries when she needs or wants something so I have to keep guessing what her needs are. Anyway, I gave her the paci and she was completely content. Perhaps it was because she was getting tired and wanted it I don't know but she didn't go down for a nap until about 45 min later. So I started thinking, what will it be like when I take the paci away during the day time.

What was it like for your kid/s? How long did it last? If you have any other info or stories/experiences regarding weaning of the paci, I would love to hear it. TIA

I have replied to a couple of paci threads in the past week, so this may sound very familiar to you.

I cut back to naps and bedtime around 18 months but it was their choice to give them up for good. They were 2.5 and Jackson woke up and told me his paci was yuk and he needed to throw it away. So he did. Jaydon followed and threw his away also. Jackson asked about his pacis 2 nights in a row, and I reminded him that he threw them away and the trash man took them. He remembered and didn't cry or whine about it. Cutting back at 18 months was a little stressful. I had to keep explaining that they were getting to be big boys and they didn't need their paci during the day when they were playing. It took about a week and they stopped asking for it.

We took them away cold turkey just before their second birthday. It was the week that we brought Liam home from the hospital. Nolan had bitten through the binky so we decided it was time for them to go. We had a couple of tantrums over the next couple of days, but then they were fine.

I took the pacifiers away during the day at around 18 months. After that, they only got them for naps and night time. (You know what I'm going to say :FIFblush: ) I expected weeks of crying and only got a couple days of crying/whimpering. After that, they accepted the new rules and were completely fine with it.

Sometime around 11 months I think the plug just got used in the crib. I don't know if it was a consious effort, but it has worked!

I pretty much only ever let the girls use their pacis for sleeping or long car trips (greater than 3 hours). Around 18 months, we ditched them all together. It was SO not a big deal, that I wished I had done it earlier. The girls even stopped asking for them within several days. By a week, they were forgotten.

I too am dreading taking away the paci, but plan to do it when the boys are 18 months. Spencer is super attatched to his, Carter probably could have given it up a long time ago but if he sees Spencer has one he wants it too. I try not to let them have it all of the time, but it's just easier for me sometimes to let them have it.
