How did you go about choosing names?

Just curious if any of you had a method or was it a process of elimination when choosing names?

Are you the rhyming - or same first letter type?

For us, with my son I had chosen a name for a girl and pretty much told my DH that if we had a son he would be Timothy Jr and we could call him TJ. DH was fine with that and that's how we came to our name.

We already had a boy and a girl (new name) picked out for this PG - and when we found out it was twins, I easily found two boy names I liked. Andrew Evan and Nicholas Everett (we do E middles names for everyone - DH and I both have it and so does DH's DD). I was thrilled with the idea of having Nick and Drew - my boy twins. Thought that sounded really well. Hmph!

Girls it is! So our names pretty much came from a little bit of family reference - the previous name we had chosen - and the process of elimination.

I'm not one to have rhyming names or pick names that start with the same letter. But like I said, we HAD to have E middle names.

So this time we've got Katherine Elizabeth (the name we had chosen before we got PG this time with the middle name from the first time - Katherine because both of us have a grandmother with a spelling variation of the same name and Elizabeth is my middle name) and Lauren Elaina (Lauren was the first name we chose if TJ had been a girl and Elaina was process of elimination).

Nope didn't want rhyming or same letter names here, too cutesy for me.

Trevor was actually the boy name we had picked out when I was pregnant with our oldest DD and we still liked it (and being a former teacher I never had a Trevor so it was okay to use). Emilie is a family name. There is an Emilie in every generation in my family and no one had a grandchild with the name Emilie so we used it. Trevor has DH's middle name and Emilie has mine!

We decided that we would each name one of the babies. If the other hated the name we would pick another but that didn't happen.

Our son's name is Cooper, and we didn't want to do the 'same first letter trend' with these two. So we're thinking of using Tucker and Hunter, and we like the fact that they all end in 'er' as kind of a neat. subtle similarity.

Naming Lucas was pretty easy. My maiden name is Lucas and my dad had all girls, so I wanted to carry on the name somehow. Lynae was the toughest......Kelly is a family name for us and there is generally one in each generation, male and/or female. However, my sister is named Kelly and that would be too confusing. My mother wanted me to name her Survannah after my great great grandmother, but that would get confused with Savannah and there are a lot of those. I didn't like any other family names really. My name is Raye Lynn, so I turned it around and came up with Lynae. Then I realized that my friend from highschool had Lanae as a middle name, oh well. DH wanted to use his great aunt's name, Clara. I just couldn't go with that. I teased that if he insisted on Clara I would use my great aunt's name too....Donna Belle.....she would have been Clara Belle and DH said he couldn't name her after a clown. Soooo, we compromised with Claire. Also, DH's name is Bradley, so that is Lucas' middle name.

Naming our first dd was tough. We both hated eachother's suggestions. Dh actually thought of the name Ava and it was a name that we both really liked. With the boys, we already had Van picked out if Ava had been a boy and with Finn- he actually had several names throughout my pregnancyp- it was Walt first, then it was Ben. We finally (and obviously) decided on Finn. All my kids have 2 middle names- one for each sides of our family.

Before we even got married, we had some fun choosing names. We wanted 3 kids so we decided on 3 girls names and 3 boys names.

Basically we went through a baby book and added every single name either of us liked to an Excel spreadsheet. We then combined them to get every single combination of 1st and middle name. We did this for each gender.

Then we went through and each took turns elimination 25 choices we didnt like. Once we down to 100 names we eliminated 10 each and once we hit 25 we did 1 at a time.

In the end we came up with.

    Elizabeth Rose
    Lorelei Amelia
    Diana Abigail

and recenly have added Madeline Alexis

For boys we came up with:

    Thomas Royce
    Christopher Vaughn
    Alexander James.

Apparently we like classic first names. :)

Oh and as you can see we gave the twins the #1 girl name and #1 boy name. They were easy to name as we had named them 2 years before. :)

DH and I had names picked out for 2 boys and names picked out for b/g twins, and we thought "well, if it's 2 girls we'll just have to think of something." 2 girls it was! We could not decide FOR MONTHS! We knew we really wanted Margaret somewhere b/c that was the name of his grandmother that recently passed away. And my middle name is Marie. So we read a bunch of name lists, and talked about it for months and still could not decide. I really wanted Sarah and Sydney, but I also love the name Lily. He really wanted to name them Adelie and Amelia. And I didn't like the way Adelie and Lily sound together, I wanted 2 names that end in different sounds. So finally we both made lists of our 10 favorite girls names, we didn't do it together, we each did it alone. Then we swapped lists, and crossed the names off each other's lists that were out of the question. (That eliminated Sarah, Sydney, and Adelie.) After the eliminations, my top name was Lily and his top name was Amelia.

So we have Amelia Margaret and Lily Marie!

No, my mom is a twin with a rhyming name and she highly objects to it.

My boy is Ryan Jr, that was a given. Their dad always wanted a boy named after him. Our girl at first I wanted Samantha, but big Ryan didn't like it. I was drinking a Sierra Mist one time and I thought, hey how about Sierra for the girl. We both loved it!

Austin James is the boy's name we have chosen.......Austin, TX is where my husband and I met and James is my husband's first name.

Allysa Dawn is the girl's name we have chosen....Allysa (Ally) is from the movie "The Notebook." That movie is my husband and my story and Dawn is the middle name of my husband's real good friend that he grew up with.

Not real exciting, but we kind of gave the family names to the twins we had last year! We didn't want to use their names again.

We chose 2 girls names and 2 boys names and if they turned out to be b/g twins then we would go with our favourite boy and girl names. I picked out Alexander because I have loved that name for as long as I can remember. And my hubby picked out Tatiana. He has always said if he has a daughter she will be named Tatiana.

We are still stuck on name choices. I have 1 boy name.. and 1 girl name.. but mine are identical so I need to come up with 1 more boy or 1 more girl (should find out what we are having next week). Oh.. and we still need middle names. We aren't apposed to same first letter but no rhyming for us.

Right now our names are Elliott for a boy And Eden for a girl.

I LOVE the name Everett and if it didn't sound so much like Elliott we would go with Everett and Elliot

Naming twins has proven much harder then I expected.

Before we knew we were having twins, we intended on not finding out the gender. So, we had a laundry list of girls names, I think our top choices for first names were Isabella, Scarlett and Estella and middle name Dominica (Dominica being DH's grandmothers name).

Then we went in for our u/s and they told us we were having twins, so I immediately wanted to know what they were. Our list for boys names was so short, I really didn't like any. We only had Jackson George - I've always loved the name Jackson and it is my grandmother's maiden name. George is DH's middle name and my FIL first name. We went around and around about what to name Baby B and it wasn't until we were filling out all the paperwork at the hospital that I threw Nicholas into the mix we were debating about. We both like it and agreed they would both have the same middle name - largely because we couldn't think of another middle name with equal importance as George that we liked. So, that's how we came up with our names: Jackson George and Nicholas George. And they really fit the boys well!

Its funny now, if we had a girl next, I don't know if I still like my previous girl names!

We had our Girl name picked out forever: Ainsley. I first heard it on West Wing and we both loved the name.
We never did come up with boy names that we liked; middle names of Glen and Keith, but no first names. We were leaning towards Kai but DD1 didn't like it, so weren't sure.

Anyway, when we found out both girls it took awhile to come up with another girl name that we liked just as well. DD1 and I loved Anya, but DH didn't like it. At one point he suggested Annika, and we just knew that was it!

We didn't intentionally pick two "A" names, it just so happens that almost all the girl names we like started with A.

The middle names are our grandmothers' first names. I love carrying on tradition and each grandma actually cried when we told them they would have a "namesake." Their names are precious!

Well, first of all, we had a couple of rules we wanted to follow (we had twin girls)

    1. No rhyming
    2. No beginning with the same letter, or the letter M, J (our and DS's initials)
    3. Not super common (my name is Jenny - born in the 70's - along with everyone else) but not too weird either
    4. Good nicknames

    So, we got:

Penelope (Penny) Iris - Penelope we heard on Lost, and liked the nickname - Iris for no particular reason at all
Cecilia (Cici) Louise - Cecilia from the Paul Simon song, Louise from my sister and mom's middle names

It took a long time to pick them!

We really wanted names that had a great meaning or meant something - not just names that were cute. We are having boys and we have ALWAYS wanted the name Jeremiah Haddon for a boy. My husband was called to the ministry at a young age and always loved the book Jeremiah, because he too was young when called to be a prophet. Haddon is after Charles Haddon Spurgeon, a preacher from the 1800's in England that my husband LOVES his sermons. But we had a hard time finding a name for the other boy. I wanted "Twin" names and we lived Jedidiah but it was too close to Jeremiah. Finally my husband asked for a list of all the choices to really pray about them, etc... He came to me and really liked Jeremiah Haddon and Michael Dean (Michael is my dad's name and my husbands name and Dean is his dad's name (he is also a pastor)) and i agreed. They aren't rhyming names or classic "Twin" names but they are two names the really mean something to us and we really like them. Since both the names are after pastors my dh is hoping they will become 3rd generation pastors :) What's funny is that at church they don't move at all during the worship but right when the sermon starts they are kicking around until the end!

We are completely stuck on names. We had girls' names picked out right away, they came to us so easily. But the boys names are tough.

My hubby wants to name them after the town where he swears he knocked me up (we were on vacation). :) If the names fit together okay, we're are going to use the first names of my dad and his dad as the twins' middle names.

For our son, we named him the night he was born. We said to each other, after we saw him, that we each had thought of a name. We shared the names and decided to use them both, hubby's for first name and mine for middle.

We have a knack for incorporating our family's names!! Our older DD is named Kyiah Rose, because my middle name is Rose after my great aunt. Baby A is Kaylin Grace because my mom's middle name is Kay and i am Lindsay after my great aunt Linda, which=Kaylin, and Grace was DHs grandmas middle name. Baby B is Keigin Elaine. Keigin was the name DH picked out for his "son" he was so sure he was having, and we just decided to keep it for a girls name, and Elaine is my grandmas middle name.

Did ya get all that? :p

    Ferfisher - SPOT ON !!

Exactly where we are coming from... a big definate on the no rhyming and not beginning with the same letter. Wanted something different to everyone else - but not too out there and good nicknames also.

My boys have strong Aussie based names: DIGGER & ARCHIE, so we have gone for Celtic style names (partner Scottish and my mum is Welsh) so we have chosen
    • Anwen (Winnie)
    • Cerys (CC)

Ours by chance rhyme...Jonas and Lucas.

When we found out I was pregnant (before knowing it was twins), DH and I, in isolation, made a list of boy and girl first names. When we narrowed the list to the names that we had in common, we had Jonas as both of our first pick boy names and we each had Lucas on our list...those were the only two boy names. So we thought, okay we'll have a Jonas. Girl names we had Julia, Elaine, Kadence and Zoey. So we had a few more girl names picked out.

Then we found out twins...well we knew we'd have a combination of names to pick out. When we found out baby b was a boy, he was going to be Jonas and then we came up with Clark for the middle because that's my father's middle name. Then a few weeks later, baby a(DH kept calling it Zoey before we knew...he was convinced it was a girl) finally cooperated and he was Lucas with James as his middle name because that's FIL's (DH"s step father but he's really more like a true father) first name but he doesn't go by it.

So basically we wanted a nice name, not too popular but not too weird and we wanted to commemorate our fathers in the names too. We figure DH's father (who we really don't have contact with because of some racially inappropriate comments he's made about me and DH's marriage and our boys) gets the benefit of the last name. There you have it.

We didn't tell anyone the names until they came into the recovery room to visit me and the boys after their birth.

We agreed on names for our identical boys.. (I think you are asking HOW meaning-- how did we decide which name to use on which baby??) Not how we picked the ACTUAL name??

Anyway, we decided on Gabriele and Nicolas and we used the "alphabet method" (i invented it.. I think..) Baby A gets the name that's first in the alphabet and baby B gets the one that's 2nd in the alphabet. I thought it was a very easy way to do it!

Turns out it was RIGHT! They have the perfect names!

We want biblical names. We named our DD Anna after the prophetess in the book of Luke and Grace as her middle name because Anna means "full of grace". The boys we named Luke Aaron and James Michael. Luke is my husbands fav book in the bible and Aaron after Moses' brother. James after the brother of Jesus and Michael is my Dh middle name.
