My mom babysat last night which has led me to creating two polls today!! I am curious as to how dark your babies room is. Again, if yours are older, can you try to remember to how it was when they were 1 years old! Thanks!

I chose very bright because when we put them to bed (7:00-7:30) it's still so light out and they have no problems going right down.

I close the blinds and the curtains and then close the door. However, all 3 kids do have a nightlight in their room as well.

Until recently it was dark in their room, but Zack began a new scared of the dark thing, so I put a nightlight in their room.

We shut the door and turn the main light out, but keep a nightlight on. We also use a shade, so not too much outside light comes in.

We used to keep their doors closed, with the blinds shut and a nightlight on. Now they insist on keeping the door open. They have never needed it to be super dark to fall asleep.

We use a night light and all the blinds and doors are shut. We plug the night light in behind their dresser, this give us just enough light so we won't run into the wall.

Ditto here. I did get heavier curtains for their room about a year ago since it seemed too bright in there and I was having issues with waking too early.

At 1 years old they would go to sleep in the dark and I would close the door 1/2 way. At about 20 months they become afraid of the dark, so now we turn on a night light, but still only shut the door 1/2 way.

The blinds are down, the lights are off (no night light) in their room but the door stays open and the light in the room next to their room stays on so they can 'read' their books. It has been like this since day one basically. When I go to bed I close their door and turn out the lights although sometimes if I am up and around I will turn the light out before I go to bed if I know they are sleeping.

Our room is SUPER bright but not by choice. We try to put them to bed around 830 or so and its still really light in their room.. I will be going out in a few days and buying room darkening curtains b/c it takes them along time to fall asleep and they get up to early.

Thats now at 20m.... At 1 year old they were still in our room with us and the room was pitch black so we all got a good night .sleep

We shut the doors and have one night light in each room. The one in the boys room is a little brighter than the one in the girls room... They have a 'scared of the dark when its convienent' thing going on.

I also have this problem with my mom!! She thinks the doors need to be open!! I think if they cry, I can hear them with the door shut! :) Dont get me started! lol

We close the door and have darkening curtains in our boys room. We have a tiny night light too for my oldest.

We have a night light that is by touch and goes off after 10 minutes. Then the room is dark with the door cracked with an all night night light in the bathroom which open for us to see if need be.

It is extremely dark. Once I taped black garbage bags to the windows they started sleeping longer and better - plus they play with their toys in the crib in the morning instead of crying to get up!

We have the room dark (no night light) and the door is open a crack. My mom could not believe we did not have a night light!!!

Until earlier this week it was always dark dark and door closed. Just this week we started using a night light.

Ours is dark dark - we even put aluminum foil on the windows to block out all of the light. We live in northern Alaska so the sun is up 24 hours a day right now!!

Ohh back to back Alaskans! *lol*

The sunlight doesn't seem to bother J and C, so we leave the room light. The curtains don't block much if anything. Although the 24 hour daylight does get to me! But, we will start seeing some dark next month!

katnpat, where do you live? If you don't mind me asking, that is.

I like to leave a little light in their room, so when they fall asleep at the shops or in the car they dont mind a little light.

We've used a nightlight since they were born and they sleep well with it. Twice the bulb has burned out and they have woken up and cried. I think they get disoriented without the light. I wouldn't be able to find my way around their room without the nightlight because we do not keep any other lights on.

I voted very dark, door cracked open because at 12 months, that's how we did it. We kept the nightlight in the hallway so that a little bit of light was going in their room but before that we didn't even use a light in the hallway. Just about 2 weeks ago, we started putting the night light in their room because they were waking up crying sometimes in the middle of the night and I had read a post here about something similar and someone suggested a night light in their room and it has actually helped, I think. I started wondering that when they were waking up in the middle of the night that they couldn't see where they were and maybe it freaked them out a bit even though they technically know where they are it might be a bit scary. Who knows but so far so good.

The room before their new one was pitch black and door closed. The room they're in now would be the same, but even with the blind closed, the light from a street light comes through. They have had some difficulty falling asleep since we moved into the new room. I think they're used to pitch dark.

We have doors closed, shades drawn, so it's pretty dark. With the way the house is laid out, there's just no way we could keep their door open, since pretty much our living room TV/reading area is RIGHT outside their door, so my husband and I would be right there in their view for much of the night. I don't think they'd ever go to sleep, LOL!! Anyway, when they first go to sleep since it's summer, even with the shades a little light still gets in, but it's relatively dark. We've never used a nightlight and in fact over Christmas when we visted my parents (approx 18 months) I put a nightlight in their room because I figured it would help them not be disoriented, and I think it made them sleep worse, so we only used it for like a night and a half. Otherwise, they sleep in pitch black all night long.

At that age they used one nightlight and the door was cracked open. It was very dim but enough that I could see if I needed to go into the room. Now that they're older they each have their own little light next to their beds.

We have light blocking shades up, and the door closed. This seems to totally do the trick, and we haven't had night wakings since 3.5 months!! :D

We consulted a sleep specialist, she told us to black out the windows. She said the room had to be eight out of ten dark. We did it at 10 months it made a big difference.

We have it dark and don't use a night light. I shut their door since DS has to have the hall light on all night just in case he needs it to go to the bathroom. If they see any light, they wake up and want out of their cribs.

It's very dark, but ours is an unusual situation: they still sleep in our bedroom (because theirs is on the other side of the house, and it's just more convenient this way for now), and when they were one year old, they still shared a crib.

We've never done anything special regarding light/dark. They have transluscent blinds, so light comes through pretty well. They sleep with the door closed and until recently always had a night light (more for my benefit than theirs, just so I could see them easily if they woke at night).
