How cautious are you about colds?

Our girls are a little over 3 months old. We have been out in public on numerous occasions like the mall, friends' houses and a playgroup. It is not like we are overly cautious but if I can prevent the girls from getting a cold this young, then I will. This weekend we have been invited to a brunch. Two of the guests (a mother and daughter) are just getting over a cold (as of today they are feeling a bit better). There is nothing to say that the husband isn't about to get sick too. Would you go? She has left it completely up to us and says she would understand if we don't go.

Alot of people think Im very paranoid but in the end I am the one who has to fork out the money for doctors visits, meds and deal with cranky sick babies. So no I wouldnt go. Im very cautious during RSV and flu season anyways. There are just too many horror stories and I know people personally who have had to go through this. Even if my children werent all preemies, Id still be that way especially in the first year as the babies immune systems are getting started

I don't think you are being paranoid, just cautious. I wouldn't go. I would reschedule for another time. Like the pp says, you are the one that has to deal with the babies when they get sick. Our babies have only been to the doctors for check-ups and thats it. I can't wait until it gets warmer.

I wouldn't go. I would feel bad exposing them and worry about them getting sick. I probably would not enjoy it because of that.

Listen to your gut on this one. I, personally, wouldn't go either. It is just not worth it IMHO.

    Ditto.

If you do want to go... just remember, the ones who were sick, don't let them in the babies faces, or touch their hands... because the hands always go directly to the mouth, which could pass on germs. People with colds are most contagious from two days before through two days after the symptoms start.

Thank you everyone. We have decided to postpone it. Our friends, the ones who are sick, suggested it!

My DD's were born very early (30weeks) and since then I have been paranoid about them getting sick. I didnt let anyone but immediate family see them the first month they were home and I am still careful about it. We havent been in public since flu season started and I dont let anyone over that has even a runny nose or that has been around anyone sick. I make everyone use hand sanitizer before touching them. I might be over-doing it, but I dont want any chances for them to get a cold, RSV, or something worse....

I think it's really sweet that your friends are so considerate. I think a lot of people think, "oh, it's just a cold" and don't give it a 2nd thought to be around babies.

Having 2 here at home right now that have been sick with colds/coughs for 3 weeks now, I think you made the right decision! It's no fun.

If you do go, I would wash my hands often and like Jamie said, remember who had the cold and who was in contact with it and maybe not let them hold the babies! They are very young still.
