How can I tell when to switch to the next nipple size?

My boys are just about 4 months old and they sometimes they seem to have a hard time with the slow flow nipples on the playtex bottles. There are times when they can eat a bottle really quickly with the slow flow and other times it seems to take them forever. I'd like to try switching up to a medium flow nipple, but I'm not sure how to tell if they are ready.
What age do they usually switch?

I think the only way to tell is to try them on the next size and see how they get on. Im having similar problems and the lady who helps me made the teat hole a little bigger (using scissors) after they rejected the next size up. However, they´re swallowing more air this way so its not ideal. I use NUK bottles (am based in Spain). GL and I hope they take the new teats! ;)

I just recently switched and my babies are doing great on the faster flow nipple. It is a hugh time saver...give it a try and see what happens.

I was going to say the same thing...the only way to know for sure is to try. It is very obvious when it is too fast for them.

If they are starting to take forever to finish a bottle or getting frustrated, I would go up a size. They may choke and gage a few times but if they are ready they will settle in. If not, the choking will continue and you can tell that they are not ready for it. GL!

I think we switched to the size 2 nipples at about 3 months. When they seemed to have to suck really hard, or to get frustrated and quit drinking halfway through (but not seeming content), that's when we switched. It can be hard to tell, especially because they'll probably make a huge mess with the new nipple for the first day or so even if they were ready to switch. But if it smoothes out after a few feedings, it was probably the right decision. And if not, you can go back.
