I often wake up on my right side or even my back sometimes. I try to wake myself up and turn but sometimes I know I've been in that position for an hour or more. I know left side is best and I always try for that. How bad is it to be on the right or back?

I had issues sleeping on my left side. It's not a big deal IMO! Do you sleep with pillows? That might help you at least sleep on one of your sides. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

I find that I sleep on my right side a lot. I lay down on my left everytime I get back into bed from my many trips to the bathroom, but I generally wake up on my right side. That is the side I naturally slept on before I was pg and also the outside edge of the bed. I haven't had any problems really and the babies look great. But you are right, you get better perfusion on your left side. I haven't been able to sleep on my back b/c I feel like I am being crushed if I do that and my belly falls to one side or the other and that is painful to me.

I dont think it matters in my opinion. I have always been a right side /stomach sleeper and I slept on my belly till it was too uncomforable then i switched to my right side and slept there till the kids were born I can not lay on my left side just feels weird.

I just spoke to my OB about this today. She said try to stay off of your back, left side is best and the right side is better than your back. SHe also said getting a quality sleep is most importnat and to just do your best. I get stressed all night about this, I'm trying to let it go. Good luck!

Anytime I lay down on the couch or for naps, I'm always on my left, so when I get to go to bed at night, its usually more comfortable on my right. I do however sometimes end up on my back when I wake up! At this point I'm just happy to be asleep though!!

I sleep mostly on my right side...i try for my left but always end up on my right :) I can sleep on my back but only if there are a good amount of pillows behind me so i am not flat.

I toss and turn All night between left and right. Of course i end up on my back also. Next morning i end up with horrible back pain. Use pillows, seems to help alittle. I've also slept on the couch, which seems to be more comfortable.Dh doesn't complain, cause i'm not waking him every hour to go pee. :)

There is nothing "bad" about sleeping on your right side.
While sleeping on the left is best - its only really necessary when instructed by your doctor.

At this point - sleep is what matters!!!

Please don't wake yourself up to change positions - you will want every second of that sleep back later!

My cousin is a midwife and I asked her just how bad is it to be on your back, because I too would wake up on my back and think "Oh No, I've done something bad!!!". Anyway, she says that if you lay on your back it will indeed put extra weight on those 2 important blood vessels, BUT...you will feel the effects of this (numbing, tingling of the hands) before the babes feel it. She told me not to freak out. She did not say anything about the right side though.

My doctor said the most important thing was actually getting some good sleep. I tried to stay on my left; however, I would turn and wake up on my back or right. I just rolled (literally) back over.

Does anybody else go completely numb from trying to stay on their left?

I remember doing a first aid course just before i found out i was pregnant with my babies and they guy who was taking it was talking about the recovery position he said never put a pregnant lady on her right side when doing the recovery position because it could affect the baby. Well from that day on he had me terrified to sleep on my right hand side so i never did during my pregnancy. Untill i was in labour and i was asking the midwifes about it and they said it was a load of rubbish!! She said that sleeping on your back could cause a little problem as it sometimes squashes the blood vessels but like pp said you would feel the affects before the babies did. x
