I was just wondering what house hold items you give the kids to play with that you feel are safe for them. In other words, what do you give them to play with other than age appropriate toys? They like to play with tupperware and the container and lids to the Puffs and they love to play with the wet wipe container, the remote control and the phones. I'm always looking for things for them to play with but I seem to see almost EVERYTHING as a hazard. Any suggestions?

Mine play with the same thing things you mentioned. I also give them plastic cups and bowls with plastic spoons/spatulas to bang on them.

Isn't it funny how they're drwan to certain things and all babies love what they shouldn't have.

We used to give my niece a wooden spoon and a couple plastic bowls to 'play the drums'. But now that I think about it maybe not such a good idea with two because the spoon might turn into a weapon.

You could try putting dry beans or something else that makes noise into a empty formula container for them to roll around or shake. Just make sure to tape it up really good and watch them to make sure they dont get the beans out.

Empty boxes were also a big hit for my niece. LOL. She loved ones that she could fit inside and hide.

Measuring spoons and measuring cups. Potholders (you can slip your hands in them), those steamer basket things that open and shut like a flower.

    Tupperware
    mixing bowls
    measuring cups
    measuring spoons
    the strainer
wooden spoons (though Amy did manage to hurt herself with one -- she was carrying it while walking, fell and banged her mouth on it -- her first bleeding injury!)
    pots and pans
    the phone (occasionally)
    the remote control
tubes of toothpaste or diaper cream (but only with supervision)
    newspapers/magazines
    empty trash can
empty Kleenex box (pack it full of scarves or socks and let them pull them all out)
empty diaper box (they like to climb in)
adult shoes (preferably fairly clean ones)
old CDs (don't expect to use them again)
cardboard tube from paper towels or TP

Love this idea for my unmatched socks! Thanks!

I remember as a kid my mom had a special drawer for me in the kitchen (the only one that wasn't baby proofed) that has pots, pans, wooden spoons, lids and tupperware stuff in it. I used to love to pull it all out and have my own percussion section!!

Mine have an old remote that has made it's way into the toy box. To distract Sam while trying to change his diaper I give him an empty bottle of little noses saline spray. He loves to chew on the top. We recently bought a TV and we cut the box into a tunnel for Sam to crawl through, he loves it!! Our day care tied a bunch of the lids from the Gerber tubs together with textured ribbon - the kids love it. They also took different sized empty water bottles and filled them with colored water and added beads and glitter and hot glued the lids on.

One of the things that my two really liked was our large bowl of plastic cookie cutters. They aren't sharp because they're plastic and they come in all those neat shapes and colors. We also had our plastic jugs, bowls, wooden spoons, and tupperware spatulas where Ainsley and Sierra could reach them.

Thank you all for sharing. I've gotten some really brilliant ideas from you all and can't wait to try them out.

As soon as they can walk and have some control over their bodies, my kids LOVED (and still do) the laundry baskets. They climb in them, their babies and toys all go in them- they love them.

    Hi
Don't want to rain on any one's parade, but I would not do the remote control. My friend from Plainfield emailed this to me.
I can't get it to cut and paste anyway, here's the scoop. A 16 month old was rushed to the ER via 911 because he swallowed a new wafer battery bigger than a size of a nickel smaller than a quarter. There was some miscommunication in the ER and the docs left it in overnight and the little boys esophagus was black brown and green when it was suppose to be pink. Since this confusion went into play he had to undergo a barium swallow test and a 2nd surgery. There is a ring around the battery that lets you know its not a coin. If this happens please move quickly with in 3 hours. I am not sure how many remotes have this new battery, but maybe get a toy kid friendly one instead of the one you use at the house and keep the remote out of your little one's reach. Thank goodness he is ok, but what a scary ride.

That's true, I wouldn't let them play unsupervised with anything that contains batteries (the wafer kind or regular) -- unless it's a toy intended for babies and the battery cover screws on. Even when they are playing with the remotes and are supervised, occasionally they fling it to the floor and the battery cover pops off and the batteries fall out. I put that on my list, but I am now remembering that DH and I agreed not to let them have any remotes with batteries in them, for just that reason.
