Honey in Graham crackers?

I've read on one of these forums from a very smart Mom, to coat cooked slimy vegtables that are hard to pick up by little fingers, with graham crackers crumbs. I thought this was ingenious! I haven't tried it yet, but want to as my girls are itching to try feeding themselves. A friend says she won't feed her 1 year old graham crackers because they have honey in them. I know the reasons / cautions about giving babies honey, but wouldn't all of the impurities / bacteria be cooked out in a graham cracker?? does anyone know? TIA

I have no idea. When mine were about yours' age I think, I gave them a graham cracker w/o thinking of the honey & then my sister asked, "Don't those have honey in them?" So I waited till they were a year old before trying them again. I'm curious about this though!

From what I understand it is ok as long as it is cooked into something. So the graham crackers should be fine!

Cooked honey in small amounts is fine. Graham crackers.... mmmm, that sounds SO good now!

Aside from the honey question, just a little tid bit for you. I used crushed graham crackers for a while until I got annoyed with the mess of crushing them. I then started to use wheat germ. SO easy!! So, if there are no wheat allergies, you could also try that too.

My ped actually told me that honey was now ok before a year, the old rule doesn't apply. The girls were ok'd at their 6 month appt to eat anything besides for nuts & eggs.

I love the wheat germ idea!! Do they really like it? Extra nutrition!!

I thought the main "honey issue" was in the pure form when it is sticky and can form a "saran wrap" type suction over the baby's airway. But I also heard the old allergy/bacteria thing is out the window and it is okay to give cooked honey.

the no honey thing was b/c of botulism...I accidenly gave mine with the honey in them and when I called the nurse she said that this time was ok but wouldn't recommend it until they were older so I just buy the kind without.

Thank you so much for the advice! I am going to get wheat germ today!! That's a great idea - and no crushing! yay! Thanks to everyone.

Same for honey nut cheerios...although "cooked" there is small risk of botulism so it's suggested you give regular cheerios. Just a thought as I had just read this.

Yep, I asked the dr. and he said things can have honey in them, you just can't give straight honey, we were told until 2.

I was told to only avoid straight honey due to botulism risk, and that it's okay after 12 months. I wouldn't worry about graham crackers at all.

Another idea for coating veggies and fruits is to put some oatmeal in your blender and turn it into a fine powder. Then you can keep a small container of it in your fridge and just use it as necessary. Due to allergy concerns, I avoid giving my babies wheat on a daily basis.
