I am going to start making the babies food instead of buying it and I was wondering what are some food you have used to make baby food with.
There isn't much of a variety at the store and could use some suggestions of other things I can make.

Has anyone given their babies avacados?

Also, when did you introduce juice to them and when you did, did you water it down at all?

    Thanks for the help,
    Carol

My boys love avacados. They have been eating them for a few months now. I blame the avacodo for their chunky legs.

I did not make much for my boys but the one thing I did make that they loved was chicken with veggies. I boiled a chicken breast, then poured in frozen peas, green beans, corn into the water and then blended it all in the belnder. I also make them sweet potatoes. They love those too.

I was not planning on introducing juice to them. They love water and I am afraid if I introduce juice, they wont want their water.

Yes, my guys LOVED them. I never made their food, I always bought it... one less thing to worry with. I never could find avacadoes though, so my grandma would make them for them.

There's a great book called Super Baby Food that gives you all kinds of details on making your own baby food. I think the author's name is Ruth Yaron. I do lots of batch cooking and freeze the food in ice cube trays.

We started with avocados...they're so easy & all my kids like them. Bananas are easy, too. With my oldest I made sweet potatoes, apples, pears, peaches, squash, green beans, peas...pretty much any veggie & fruit I could find. I've already started making babyfood for my twins...it's really simpler & less time consuming than I ever imagined. Check out wholesomebabyfood.com for recipes & ideas.

we do both (homemade and jars). I tend to buy fruit and prepare vegetables for them... Sweet potatoes, peas, carrot, pumpkin, some rice, broccoli - in different combinations. Avocado, we mash it with some banana.

I think that the scoop on juice is that it is empty calories so why give it to them.

My kids love water and I hope they stay liking it for a long time :)

I introduced avocado right after banana, their first and second foods at 6 months. They LOVE avocado. They eat 1/2 an avocado a day! It's a great food with lots of healthy fats for brain development and a great way to introduce chunkiness - because it's so soft.

I make all their food and have from the beginning. My two guides are "Super Baby Food" and "Child of Mine" I do a combination of blending up steamed veggies into a medley that I add to their grain and yogurt meals, and steaming them in chunks that I offer as finger foods. They also eat brown rice pasta (we're waiting on wheat), tofu, whole beans (slightly mashed), cheese cubes, and puffed rice as finger food.

In the veggie medley I do a 1-1 ratio of green veggie (broccoli & parsley lately) and orange veggie (yam & winter squash).

Mine also loved avocados. And they are great if you are going to be out when it's time for the babies to eat. You can take a knife and some spoons and they can have it anywhere. I've made their food since the beginning and have made squash, yams, white potato, peas, mixed veggies, cauliflower, broccolli, carrots, apple sauce, pears, peaches, apricots, blueberries, chicken, ground turkey, fish (tilapia), spaghetti with homemade sauce and mac n' cheese. When I first started, I introduced each individual thing every three days to make sure they didn't have a reaction. I just cooked everything and put it in a food processer, with a little of the water from the pot. At nine months my pedi said they can really have anything but shellfish, nuts and honey. It's been really easy and convenient to have all their meals ready. I just pick a day and do a whole bunch. It usually lasts for a month or so. I bought these little 2oz plastic cups with lids at Costco or Sam's Club and they have been great. They are disposable and I can take them with me. I found that I never had enough ice cube trays or enough room to freeze the food I wanted. Good Luck and Have fun!!!!

Can't stress enough how much I loved this site! Also I found that if I mashed my avocodo and quickly froze it in the trays, it was still mostly green when I thawed it.
