I just found out this afternoon I'm pregnant again! I have lots of things running through my mind, but most important, I'm still bf-ing - should I begin weaning? Can my body support all four of us (the twins, the new little one, and myself)? Would it help the girls be a bit more independent if I weaned now? Any thoughts? Thanks!

    Congrats on your pregnancy! :)

You probably don't have to wean if you would prefer not to. Here is some info for you:

    safety of nursing during pregnancy
    nutrition

As far as weaning making kids more independent, I really don't think it would. Some would even argue that continuing to nurse helps kids get more independent, since it gives them the security they need to feel confident. I really don't know either way, but I think kids are probably going to be clingy/independent at their own pace regardless of what you do. So really the most important consideration is your own comfort.

    Congrats again!

Congrats! How much are you nursing? I know I was just exhausted during my pregnancy and I am glad the twins were the age they were... so I could wean them and not feel bad about it. The links that Holly gave you are great! It is definitely possible to continue nursing. Some say that your milk changes and the twins will wean themselves at some point.

Congratulations!!! That is great news :) I think you can keep nursing as long as you are eating enough calories to support everyone!

I nursed both my kids into the next pregnancy. My dd stopped nursing at about 14 weeks by screaming every time she tried to nurse. We decided this was because of the change in the milk in the second trimester. My DS stopped not long after we found out we were having twins. I think I encouraged it a bit more because I was concerned about being pregnant with twins and nursing my son too. I was just so exhausted. But that was into the second trimester too. I was really hungry even though I was sick. My midwife's one concern was me being sick and so not keeping down all the nutrients I needed to for all 4 of us. If you chose to continue to nurse you should probably talk to your Dr about how many calories you need to get and make sure you are getting all the different nutrients you need.

It's definitely possible to nurse through pregnancy. My big ones didn't care what was going on, as long as they still got to nurse. Just make sure you're eating enough, and if it's too much stress on your body (for me it was always a lot more painful to nurse when I was pregnant) then you can always consider nursing just enough to appease them (when DS weaned he was only allowed to nurse for about a minute once a day). It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Congratulations!

My SIL just gave birth to their second child and nursed their first the entire pregnancy (now she is tandem nursing both). She never had any problems. You just have to make sure to eat enough of the right foods.

Congratulations! I'm so jealous...we're done, but I secretly wish we weren't. Have a wonderful pregnancy.

    Congratulations!

Just wanted to add from my experience: I got pregnant 5 months(!) after my first was born.

I didn't plan on weaning, but I ended up being so completely exhausted that I figured if it affects me that way - it probably also have an effect on the fetus. So I weaned.

But everybody is different. Maybe try it and see what happens?

It is definitely possible to breastfeed during pregnancy, but I wouldn't recommend it. I did it twice; when I was pregnant with my second, I nursed for the first three months; then when I was pregnant with my third, I nursed for the first two. It wiped me out so I had very little energy left for anything else. In hindsight, I wouldn't do it again.

Since your twins are over a year old, they are ready for cow's milk in a sippy cup. You've done a great job getting them this far!

    Congratulations!

Thank you! You all gave me such great info and encouragement! I'm still nursing for now, about 4 or 5 times a day, but I'm thinking that I'll gradually decrease the amount of time nursing. But at the same time, I'm going to keep an open mind and be ready and willing to wean completely if I find that it is going to be best for me and thus the new little one on the way. My mind is still trying to process everything after finding out the news! Seriously, thank you so much!

I think that keeping an open mind is the most important thing. Just play it by ear and see how it goes.

Congrats. Sounds like a great approach you have. Read some stuff about it though. You might do fine nursing, or a number of other things might happen. It might start to be physically uncomfortable. You might start to get the hee-be-jee-bees while nursing. The girls might wean on their own in the 2nd trimester when milk supply drops. Or you might feel good about nursing throughout. One great book I read is 'How Weaning Happens' by LLL They have section on nursing while pregnant which talks about this stuff.

This one blog I read the Mom has 2 sets of identical twins that are nursing. 2 year olds and newborns.. so anything is possible:
