Please add your recommendations for gifts/toys for Newborn-5 month olds. Once we get enough responses we will make this a sticky at the top for the Holiday season!

If you have 1-4 year olds please check out the recommendation threads in the Ages 1-4 Forum.

I cannot wait to see the responses, maybe then I can figure out what to ask for from others for the kiddos!

This is not really a gift suggestion but what we have asked that our families not buy anything for christmas this year. We have so much "stuff" for them and much of it isn't useful. They'll never know the difference and next year when they are 1...they can spoil them rotten if they want. For now, more stuff is just for us to deal with. What we've asked instead is that they write a letter to the girls (individually) to share their thoughts about their first few months of life. I figure those will be way more precious to the girls than any toy or outfit and for us - the less "stuff" the better.

I would love this for the babies:

It's available on Amazon, Babycenter, lots of places. I suspect my 3-year-old will want it when she sees it though, LOL -- although I saw something similar at the Discovery Channel store that was fancier (and more expensive), and better for her....

There are a ton of Fisher Price things I'd like for them, but they're all for 6+ months -- like the stack n' roll cups, the Little Superstar Sing-along Stage, etc.

I agree with the Savings Bond idea. For every holiday or special occasion we have given the boys a Savings Bond. We purchased bonds for both of our girls from the time they were born and when they were older they had quite a stash. While they weren't that impressed with the gift when they were small - when they were able to cash them in for several thousand dollars when they were older they saw a real appreciation for that particular gift.

An addition to the previous post - I also buy a special Christmas Ornament and date it for our girls and I have continued this with the twins. When the girls left home and were ready to have their first Christmas in their own homes they had special decorations for their trees.

because so many people buy the necessities as gifts, i found that fall babies don't have a lot of 'toys'. so my list would be: rattles, mirrors for tummytime, etc.

We are still in need of necessities, so that is what will be gotten for babies this Christmas. In particular, we are getting a double stroller, one exersaucer, a few cloths and the perhaps a couple small hand toys.

Aside from any necessities they might need (onesies, sleepers, etc)...

Activity mat (like the TinyLove one where the toys hang above the kiddos)
    Teething toys
Toys that can attach and hang from the stroller or carseat

I wanted to add, we will probably be getting high chairs as well. Almost time to start solids :)

The BEST gifts that my babies received that first Christmas were actually the necessities! My parents bought a ton of formula, diapers, and wipes, and I thought it was the best gift, especially since they weren't really in need of anything.

CD Player and CDs for the bedroom - My twins love music! The Baby Einstein music collections are great.

Mine will be six months by Christmas, so we will get a few toys, but we're mainly asking for money to put towards high chairs and convertible car seafts.

    Like everyone else...besides necessities.

    I'd suggest:

    exersaucers

    activity mat

high chairs or boosters (love my Evenflo high chairs but if I hadn't gotten those I would use my FP Healthy Care Boosters at home (i have them for traveling and visiting family))

baby food (if you don't make you're own it gets kind of expensive once you start adding in meals...my MIL bought us tons of jars of baby food and that helped a lot...we started solids between 4-5 months)

crib toys (I love my FP Ocean Wonder Aquarium...the boys love them too; the FP kick and learn was a favorite of the boys too as they started to get a little more active...still love them)

I guess that's most of my suggestions for this age range...most of them can be used well past 5 months too so more bang for your buck kind of thing.
