Holding objects for comfort?

Tyler has this odd behavior of wanting to hold water bottles, suntan lotion, spatulas, watering cans, you name it. He will fixate on one item and carry that item around alot. He will put it down when it is meal time and sometimes he will take it in the car with him. I am able to get somethings out of his hands without issue and other times there is a complete and total meltdown over it. I think he does it for comfort and security but maybe there is something else going on??

Anyone else's kid carry objects around all the time?

    Rachel,
Clare has been doing this since she has been about a year old. It started with plastic stacking cups....now it is just about anything. She will even hold a box of kids toothpaste in the car, just to be holding something. I asked my Ped about it at their last visit, and she wasn't at all concerned. She said some kids just like the comfort of holding onto something.

I think it's a comfort thing. I know Tony does it sometimes. :pardon: He'll go through periods were he has to be holding a car. All. The. Time. He's slept with them too, but I had to stop that because he'd stay up and play in the dark.

I think I told you this once, not sure, but my friends son likes to hold on to some odd things. Right now he's into hammers... real ones. A few months ago he had to carry around and sleep with a long metal bar. They're oddlings, aren't they?

 Kathy and Liz. Thanks so much for responding. Yes, Liz now that you mention it I do remember you told me that. I guess I forgot in a moment of panic wondering would he be sleeping with the watering can tonight. :pardon:

Mine do it too. Usually they will fixate on a certain object for a day or two, then move on to something else. They carry it around with a death grip and usually have to have whatever it is with them while they eat and sleep too. I think it's pretty normal and rather comical.

Oh, totally, Rachel! Andrew is the king of this stuff. Obsessions have included: a fork; a measuring cup; one particular magnetic alphabet letter; a little spoon; other stuff I can't remember right now... He had huge meltdowns when I wouldn't let him poke his eyes out with sleep with a fork.

Totally normal. My kids actually have not done it much, but I had a friend whose DS carried around a fork for about a week.

Rachel, Trevor will do this too. Especially with DVD's, he is always holding a DVD for some reason. :pardon:

I thought my DD was the only one! lol. And to be honest I think the things you all are saying your kids have to hold are VERY wierd, but Im sure you will think mine is too. My DD likes to hold fuzz (out of stuffed animals or pillows), and hair (human hair, that she finds on the floor) . . Shes also had a couple of toys that shes obesessed over. I once got her one of those 25 cent balls out of a machine that have toys in them and she got a MINI plastic curious george. When I say mini, it was maybe 3/4 of an inch tall and she had to have it ALL. THE. TIME. Lately its been papers. . .school papers that she brings home, and she wants to sleep with them too. :D

Jake likes 'sticks'. Or anything that resembles a 'stick'(toy golf club, fishing pole, etc). And he has a meltdown if I don't give him his 'stick' RIGHT NOW!

Totally!! Both my girls carry things with them all the time. The item of the moment will come everywhere with us. In fact one DD has a bag that she carries because she has numerous things that she likes to carry with her.

    Rachel,
My Amelia is a hoarder. she always has to hold something and carry things. Her "collection" of what she carries varies. At times it's one object, other times she needs bags to carry it all. I figured it was because when she was smaller Kyle would always take everything away from her. Maybe it's a comfort thing. I dunno.

Mine do the same thing, it's usually a car yesterday it was a dirty old penny. I always have to pry it out of their hand at bedtime or bath time. This usually involves me making up some story about why I need to take the item from them. Whether it's that the penny is hungry and I have to go feed it, or the car needs to go to bed.
