My girls are growing so fast! They crawl everywhere and have been for over a month now. The sit up and play together. They pull up on anything and everything. They even test to see how long they can stand when they let go ("look mom, no hands!"). They're loving the baby food and their puffs. They jibber jabber with each other all day. Get upset when they drop a toy. Everything I can imagine they could be doing at this age.

BUT...they won't even attempt to hold their own bottles! I put their hands on the sides and they jerk them away feistily. (Is that a word?) It seems to me that my older kiddos held their bottles around 5 or 6 months. So what gives? Are they just being stubborn? I need some tips for teaching them this trick. They're starting to get upset when I feed them one at a time!

    Thanks everyone!

My DS wouldn't hold his until about 10.5 months!!  You threw my theory about being a typical "man" out the window with your girls! LOL! I finally just gave up, put his hands around the bottle and walked away. He quickly picked it up and held it...hmmm.....mommy was fooled for a long time!

    Good Luck to you!!

I would help them put their hands on the bottle then move away. They'll get it once they notice you aren't doing it.

Mine were not ready to do it until about 11 months. I layed them on boppys which were propped up a little higher with couch pillows and gave it to them and they did it. What a great difference that made for me. Just keep working at it but also try different ways and positions and places where you give it to them. They just may not be ready to take that job away from you. They know how much you love to sit there hold 2 bottles at the same time several times a day ;)

My boys are 7 months and show no sign that they'll be holding their own bottles any time soon. I wish!

I think mine didn't until after 9, but before 10. I was told by EI to put their hands on it and push their elbows in toward their sides. She said this would help teach them. I know a few kids that NEVER held their own.

My girls are three days older than yours and they don't hold them either..they have no interest in doing it to..I'm glad mine isn't the only one cause people who come to visit always comment on it..so irritating I always feel I've done something wrong by not showing them earlier.

Mine didn't hold their own bottles until 11 months. And even then I pretty much held them to feed them, but they could hold them at that point. My oldest DD was holding her own bottle at 8 months though.

Mine never did. Grace did in the last month of bottles, only if she felt like it. We definitely never counted on it.

I found that if I put the bottle in their mouths - they would just lay their arms up and say aahhh - no work! BUT - if I held the bottle in front of them - when they were laying down - they would grab it. I would hold it there until they grabbed it. I'm not sure if this will work for you but maybe try it. I wouldn't have even noticed I was doing this until their Dad said "they don't hold their bottles for ME" and I watched him put the bottle right in their mouths and they would just lay back. I would say try this - and take it out of their mouths and hold it so they could grab it - and waa laa - they did.

This only works for one of my DDs! The other will whine until you give it to her... she has 'people' to hold it for her :)

I purchased the bottle 'trainer handles' (avent) and have been practicing a little every day, they only seem to 'get it' when they are laying on their boppies, I think it is too heavy when they are sitting up in their highchairs. I too wish they would hold them soon as it would make life a little easier don't you think?

Mine aren't really either, although my DS breastfed until just a month ago, so I figure we're starting at square one. They are doing OK with sippy cups, so I figure why worry about bottles since I plan on going to all sippes hopefully by their first birthday...OK I know that's a ways off but it's not like they're going to drink from bottles their whole life!
