History

What do you all do for studying history? I hate to say it, but it is a subject I hated in school, so we have not done a very good job covering it thus far. Do you use a particular curriculum? Are you just winging it?

 

I know some home schoolers that use a Story of the World http://www.lamppostpublishing.com/story-world.htm . We haven't started K so I'm not sure what we will use yet. I'm going to a homeschooling conference in June that will have a ton of vendors so I'm hoping to spend time looking through curriculms to see what they looked like before I decide.

SOTW is a very popular choice. If I could find something like that that was secular I would be in good shape. I'm not game on having to dig through the program in order to filter it for our family's needs. For right now I have just ordered The Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia Of World History to start us off. It looks like something DD will enjoy reading and follows the same chronological order that SOTW does.

 

I'll have to look at that. What about Sonlights program for history?

 

I used Sonlight for math to begin with. We could easily skip the Bible verse that came at the beginning of each book. I know the rest of their curriculum is heavy on the religious side. Thanks for the suggestion though. I hope I can extend this Usborne book for a while. Maybe by then she will be old enough for standard school text if I choose to go that way.

 

Duh! I didn't catch the secular part in your 2nd post. I'm sorry...

The Usborne book looks really interesting and I like that they have the links on the internet for the kids to research.

I was really paranoid about the internet linking stuff, because as we all know, the internet changes constantly. The way they do it though, you go to the Usborne site and they have current links to the topics that are in the book. It tells you something like "to see more information about cave drawings go to (insert Usborne linking address) and click on cave drawings." I hope this gets DD interested in using the computer for additional research and not just for Barbie dress up sites .
