DS chews on this blanket, it's about 3 years old, and it just reeks. He chews on it regularly. Throwing it away is not an option. He knows which blanket this is. I've bought two more over time and he likes them, but not like the original. Is there something that I can do in the wash to get rid of the stink?

Try baking soda and/or borax, maybe soak it for a while.

Try soaking it in oxyclean and warm water overnight then wash... that stuff can work wonders

I thought my DS was the only one who ever chewed on his blanket. He actually said the words, "Just one more chew" once when we told him to put it down as we were leaving the house.

I always wash our really stinky stuff with some white vinegar. Seems to do the trick. We've got 2 that are attached to their blankies and don't like to give them up for washing. I have to sneak them away for washing during a time when they are really into something else.

I have the same problem with mitchells blanket. I wash it in hot water/tide and downy fabric softener and that used to work but I think thats not even doing the trick anymore. I am going to try some of the things mentioned here..

I have just over an hour in the morning when I can "steal" it. Generally, we go on an outing so that we aren't even in the house when it's washing or drying. Friday, it was drying and was SCREAMING for it! I felt so sorry for him. :(

Tomorrow he's in mother's day out for a few hours. I'm going to try and wash it in a few things a couple of times and see if it does the trick. Thanks for all of your suggestions. :)

You might try spraying it with Nature's Miracle before you wash it. It can get just about any smell out - its really made for pet odors (think cat pee!), but it hasn't let me down yet.

    Good luck!

PP has given some great suggestions (vinegar, oxiclean, borax etc) I can tell you since I cloth diaper, for the really bad diapers I use Bac-Out Stain & odor eliminator by biokleen. SEE HERE

You can even just put some in your wash and do a pre-rinse or soak with the stuff--- if it can get out the smell of stinky poo it can handle anything IMO :)

Try soaking it in vinegar for a bit before throwing it in the wash. I would then add vinegar and baking soda to the washer. I use Ecover organic laundry detergent and the natural enzymes and extracts in it work wonders. I know how blankees are. My older ds was so attached to his I couldn't take it away until it fell apart (literally). I had to knit him a replacement so he would be alright with it. He is almost 14 and he still has this blanket in his bed . GL

Can I add vinegar to a front loader? If so, when and where? Does anyone know?

Yes, you can use vinegar in a front loader (at least I do). I add it to the detergent tray as the soap is being washed into the cycle. I do it at the beginning of the cycle so it can do it's stuff then the rinse gets out most of the smell (which goes away after a few hours even if you put it in later).

I'd suggest trying one or the other. Vinegar is an acid and will neutralize a base, baking soda is a base and will neutralize and acid. You can also by "washing soda", which is a stronger base than baking soda.

Use them together and they neutralize each other.

Most bodily fluids and foods tend to be acidic, so baking soda is usually the way to go (it works like bleach, just isn't as strong. But beware, it CAN bleach out colors if you use a lot of it).

I might try washing the blanket to get off dirt and saliva, and then soaking it for awhile in water with some baking soda or washing soda dissolved in it, then rinsing (or even washing again). If you don't have time for that, just throw the baking soda right in the wash.

    Good luck!

The only thing I thought of was "Wasn't that what they always used in paper mache volcanos to make the lava?"

Yep. Acid/Base reaction releases lots of carbon dioxide. You can pour vinegar and baking soda into a plastic bottle and put a balloon over the opening and it will inflate.

Lots of "natural" cleaning sites suggest cleaning things by using the two together and say things like "the bubbles mean it's working". The bubbles just mean it's reacting and producing CO2 gas. Whether or not that somehow helps make your toilet clean I have no idea.

It's fun to play with though (the vinegar and baking soda, not the toilet).

Well, I put in about 1/4 cup of vinegar and a couple teaspoons of baking soda this morning. I put it on a small load with two rinses. I also added in the laundry detergent......

It's not any better! It has a bit of a weird smell to it now and I'm sure that's from the vinegar.

I'll try again in another couple of days. Maybe it needs a few times with the "treatment"!

I would be leary to use anything chemical if he puts it in his mouth.

Plain white vinegar is a miracle worker.

It is a great combination to clean the toilet, the recipe is baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice. It is the best thing I have found, It gets out all the stains the other stuff won't as well as the odor. It is really fun to watch it react. It is like a mini science project every time I clean the toilet .

Will he give it up long enough to soak it for a bit. I find that if I soak the babies stuff before I wash it the stains and odors come out. If the vinegar and/or baking soda don't work I would go to the Oxi Clean. That does a great job on anything the others won't get out. The Ecover detergent is also a great option. Odors can be tough, GL.

:good: This has always done the trick for me. Good luck, I'm sorry the first try didn't work. :(

I didn't want to buy the huge container of Oxyclean in case it didn't work, so I bought a smaller tub of the same thing made by Clorox. I added it to the detergent and threw in the blanket.

    IT WORKED!!!!! It totally worked!!!!

I would guess that Oxyclean would have done the same thing.

    MIRACULOUS! :thanks:

This was Martin, too!!! I just kept washing and washing the new one's and now we are getting close (so, it takes a LONG time). But I would put it in the wash with either Oxyclean (maybe soak it for a bit?) or a color safe bleach? It's hard to get that stank out! I know what you are talking about. Martin and Ali just suddenly stopped chewing their fave things, so there is hope!!!

I didn't read replies  sorry if this is just a dupe!
