Hi all! I have been having problems sleeping lately and am wondering if anyone else has delt with this.

At around 16 weeks my Dr told me that I'm experiancing some sciatic nerve pain. (When I would lay on my left side my leg would go to sleep, and I would get shooting pains from my lower back down my leg.) But IT wasn't keeping me from finding a comfortable position to sleep in. Now, however, whichever side I sleep on, after about 10 - 15 minutes of laying on my side my hip begins to hurt... a LOT. So much that I've got to find a new position. Well, I can't really sleep on my back (though I've tried to prop myself up with wedge pillows and 3 others behind my head) and I can't really sleep on my stomach. I have a body pillow and tried just about every configuration of propping and just could not get comfortable. As a result, I just stumbled out of bed a little bit ago, exhausted as ever.

Has anyone else delt with this, or have any suggestions? Some sleep would be lovely. [IMG]

Yes, I went through this with my first pregnancy and am now starting to feel it again! I got those magic fingers that you put under the sheet and those helped a little.

Also a heating pad helped sometimes. Good luck!

Hi There, I can definitely relate to it.......I'm going through the same thing right now. All night I switch from left to right. The doctor did recommend the heating pads and to elevate my feet even if I'm lying down sideways. That's helped a little but I still get the side hip pain. Try it - maybe it'll help you. Sorry, I wish I had better news for you.

I have been suffering with Hip pain at night for months. I wish I had a magic cure but I don't. [IMG] I did get a feather matress pad that does help make things softer. I got it at Target for 60.00.

my remody for hurtful hip pain is a good swim in a pool. although that won't help while you are trying to sleep. but with my 2nd pregnancy i had that pain and i went to my doctor and asked what he thought about a chiropractic working on my back. because my son was laying on my siatic nerve and i couldn't walk very well and everytime i tried to sleep i couldn't get comfortable. my dr told me that he didn't think that he wanted to risk injury, and i laughed at him because i had been seeing a chiropractor for about 4 years before. i found a doctor that did do adjustments at his office and he was later the doctor that delivered me. i switched drs because the other one was too old fashioned and refused to see that i was in pain. he wouldn't even give me a pain reliever. and when his office called me to ask why i was switching and i told them that i was a dr. i wouldn't let my patient suffer with pain if there was a way to relieve it and that i found one that was willing to help with my problem because the other one wouldn't take the time to care. that lady never called me back.

i'm not saying that you should do what i did but i was in tremendous pain and i knew that one way to relieve it was to go to a chiropractor. i just happened to find a dr that had switched his major in college from chiropractic to Obstetrics making his schooling go from 4 years to 8 years. it's just a thought. all my dr did was have me lay on my back and he rotated my legs one at a time and put a little preasure on the small of my back to make the baby move. it could very well be the position of the babies.

i hope that gives you a little insight. lots of love!

I had horrible hip pain from about 10 weeks on. I tried various sleeping positions and slept on our double thick air mattress for awhile because it was more comfortable. What it came down to was that our mattress was too firm. Well for christmas I bought myself a memory foam mattress topper. It really does conform to my body,so I don't need a body pillow and I rarely wake up with any low back pain and no more hip pain. The cons are it is more difficult to get out of bed, it holds in the heat from your body so I get hotter at night when I am sleeping, and it adds 3 inches of thickness to your mattress so I had to buy extra deep sheets. There are a bunch of different kinds, I wanted the really thick one, I bought it at Sams Club for $120 and it is definitely worth the money to me. They have less expensive ones at Target that are not as thick.
I am on bedrest now and so glad I have it as I know my back and hips would hurt even more now without it. [IMG]

No good news for you, just commiserating. I have sciatic pain on both sides, so my nights go like this: try to fall asleep on left side. Walk one hour later, haul myself over to right side, wake one hour later, get up and pee. Start over.

I also have bad carpal tunnel so if the sciatica doesn't wake me the CT does...basically I get a few hours of sleep each night til i give up and get out of bed so I don't wake DH.

My OB recommended that I see a physical therapist for the sciatica and lower back pain because I'm only 25 weeks...we'll see if that helps.

    Hope you feel better!

Thanks for the replies, I really appreiate it! [IMG]

We have a sleep # bed with a feather topper on it, (my # is a 30... pretty darn soft) so I don't know how much more I could pile on the bed. haha! I think I'll try to find a heating pad, or maybe just a smaller pillow right under my hip? I was thinking maybe even using one of those pillow you sit on for hemeroids, the donut ones... circle my hip in soft loveliness so I'm not laying directly on it. [IMG]

My husband is already having a hard time finding me at night thru all the pillows! hehehe.

Thanks for the posts. This is mostly commiserating with some things that work sometimes, because when I first started I felt like the princess and the pea had nothing on me for the number of quilts and sleeping bags we piled on the mattress to make my hips hurt less. Lately, though, I've been having some luck with the memory foam, a pillow between my legs, and sleeping back a bit against another pillow to take some weight off so I'm not directly on my hip bone. Sometimes I'll try sleeping at an angle (pillow under one hip and back so that side is raised up) to even out the pressure. The hardest thing for me is that I used to be a CHAMPION sleepr, so sometimes some combination of rolling, fighting with pillows, and/or giving up completely and hoping I can get a decent night's sleep every other night is the only way I can get through. I hope something in this helps.

I had hip pain really bad when I was in the hospital on bed rest for nearly 4 weeks. I told my nurse about it and she brought in an inflatable mattress that kind of looks like those egg carton mattresses. it was about 2 inches thick when blown up and it was like sleeping on a cloud. She put it under the sheet on my bed and it was a God send. I had NO MORE hip pain. I never thought in a million yaers that it would've worked. So, when they did discharge me, they let me take it home and I put it under the sheet on my side of our king size bed. DH would tease me about getting up onto my "mountain" to sleep, but it helped 100%. When I got admitted again before I had my girls, I asked for another mattress adn they happily gave one to me.

YOu might be able to find a thin one at a camping supply store or something like that.

    Hi there,

I was adjusted by a chiropractor during my pregnancy last year. (Activator method -- which is not a cracking kind of chiropractic)

If you can do it, I'd go see a chiropractor who works with pregnant women. it ensured that I had a pain free pregnancy and I went to 37.5 weeks iwth 2 nearly 7 pound babies.

also -- if you have access to a therma rest like mattress pad, I'd buy it. We own a latex foam bed and I had minimal trouble sleeping during my entire pregnancy cause the foam bed just cradles you and supports you, so you don't ahve the same discomfort a normal spring bed has.

I have suffered from severe hip pain also for months. We bought the feather bed, I've done the heating pad and they still ache. I'm normally awake around 5:30 because I ache so bad and can't get comfortable. I'm definitely going to consider the "egg carton" mattress pad for the rest of this pg while I can still get some sleep!

The egg carton thing sounds good...never tried that...

I'm only 13 weeks into my twin preg, but with others I've found the pillow between the knees helps me a lot. It seems like it realigns my hips and redistributes the pressure.

Hope you find something that helps!

When you do, let me know, I'll be there soon!

I can commiserate on this one, too...although only recently has it started to bug me. It feels like I wake up every couple of hours to roll over, but usually end up getting up to pee while I'm awake! We have the memory foam topper already, and I think I'm just going to have to invest in more pillows!

Ditto the recommendation for a memory foam mattress topper. That helped immensely.

I had terrible hip pain because one of my LO's was practically sitting on my hip bone. I always used either heat packs or ice packs, but was told to be sure they are not on your belly. I also had a pillow in between my legs when I slept and that seemed to help a lot too.

Isn't that what got you in this trouble in the 1st place...sorry just had to throw that one out.

I had the hip pain too...only thing that worked was heat.

I suffered from hip pain as well. I bought a really thick sheepskin underlay which helped somewhat, I also slept with a pilow between my legs.

The last 6 weeks or so, I would sleep for no more than an hour, wake up with hip pain, and since it was such hard work to move around, I'd take advantage of moving and go to the toilet. When I got back into bed, I'd lie on the other side. This would happen around 6 times per night.

Rest assured, since the day I delivered...no one bit of hip pain.
