I posted earlier today about my highchairs in another thread and it made me remember a question I have had for awhile. Does anyone else NOT buckle their children in the highchair while feeding them. The twins are not eating yet but for DD #1 I DID NOT buckle her while I was feeding her (when I was right there within arms reach) because of my choking fears. If a child begins to choke it just seems it would take more time to unbuckle them and get to them.... wasting precious seconds. I know that I myself would also be in a panic and probably try to rip them outta the chair without unbuckling first. Any other thoughts on this???

I use the Stokke chairs (the European Tripp Trapp version which is slightly different than the US one) and it doesn't have belts. I can basically lift them out ASAP although it's not that easy to get out themselves (nor to get them in, especially if their legs do not participate).

So I've never really thought about it, but then I have a completely different type of chair.

wow I never thought of that!!! Something to think about. I think I will skip the belt...there are great stopper thingies on my prima poppas. Thanks, for your question.

Not for chocking reasons but I didn't buckle mine in until they started standing up and then I buckled them in. Then even while buckled in one of my skinny minnies managed to get out and get on the table tray. He was about to crawl over to my dd's tray when I got to him.

You have to weigh the risks for your kids I guess. Mine are to seeky and skinny to not tie tightly at this point.

We are still using the bouncy seats or Bumbo when feeding the girls, but I never buckled DS in his highchair for the same reason as you.

I dont buckle. I never have. No reason I guess...

But there is one thing that I dont do... You know those wooden high chairs that some retaurants have? People flip those over and put their infant carriers on top... I did until my son fell out when he was four months old!!! I had just put him back in the carrier, about to buckle him when it slid out and he feel on the floor!! I guess that was before I had "mommy reflexes"... Its so unsafe! Thise arent made for that!! OMG! Anyway, sorry to hijack your thread!!

I am glad you asked this question! I don't buckle mine in either (nor my older son). I always wondered about others!!! Mine are starting to get chunky and there is a nice "stopper" around their crotch.

It says on a lot of those chairs not to use it for that purpose. We have though. My step-dad freaked out one day that we were with him and did it. But after reading this I will NEVER do it again. Thanks for the warning.

I buckle my kids in once they start acting like they want to climb out. When Emma was just over a year old I was feeding her and turned around to get something out of the microwave. When I turned around again, there she was standing on her tray!!!! :icon_eek: She had slipped out of her seatbelt and climbed onto the tray in less than 30 seconds... that's why I suggest 5 pt harnesses for those of you with skinny active kids.

We didnt buckle the girls in when they were little, I dont even recall buckling them in when they got more mobile either. Its just too much of a risk with choking and wasting precious time.
The boys are just starting in the bumbos so havent come to that crossroad yet, still have to buy high chairs.

That is why I buckle the 5 point harness around their waists instead of their shoulders. I have to buckle them in because they will fall out if I don't but at least the strap around their waists makes it easier to get them out quickly.

I don't buckle my girls in, they hate to be buckled into anything. :) I figure they got the tray right there and that stops then from even attempting to climb out. Plus if they choke I want easy access so I can get them out as fast as possible.

I do not buckle them. The high chairs have a bar so they cannot slide out and the tray keeps them seated..most of the time anyway!
