My boys have always been great eaters and really good at sitting in their high chairs and going to chow town! Fast forward to the past couple of weeks and it is like they did a 180! They eat a few pieces of whatever it is they are having and them just pick at the rest or throw it on the floor. Now if I take them out of the high chair and let them just sit on the floor with a plate or bowl of food they eat EVERYTHING! They do fine at restaurants, it's just at home. Has anyone else experienced this?

Time to move to booster seats mama! ;) At some point they hit this stage where they don't want to be seperated from the group anymore, they want to be right up there in the action! I'm guessing they are using the little wooden booster chairs at restaurants that let them eat right at the table, right? That's what they are wanting at home too :) If your high chair is able to take the tray off and slide up to the regular table, I would try that. If not, I'd recommend getting a booster seat for them to use at the table :)

We moved ours to boosters at about 15 months or so and they love them, they eat much better sitting with us instead of off to the side. I'm not saying they don't still toss food and dishes , but they do enjoy sitting with us

I've been thinking/dealing with the same thing...but need to try and prolong the high chair thing because we need to buy another kitchen chair (that won't match :( ) for our 2nd booster.

Wonder what ages other have moved their kids to boosters?

My boys love the booster seats. We've been using them on occasion for 2 months now.
Marlena, you can mix and match even different chairs in your dining room/kitchen - where kids eat. I have a brown table with black chairs, 4 of the same, two different. It looks quite good.

I agree with Danielle, it sounds like they are ready for the booster seats at the table. My two were fighting their tray on their booster seat and that's when we moved their seats to the big table with us.

We didn't move our guys to boosters until they turned 2, but we did pull their highchairs right up to the table so they were sort of sitting with us. We had a huge phase of throwing (in fact, it still happens occasionally <_<) but it's really tapered off. I would tell them "no throw", then ask them to give me food if they didn't want it, instead of throwing. Then I'd take their trays away if they continued.

Try boosters and see if it helps!

We used the spacesaver highchairs (I think you have the same ones) and at 16 mths old when K & R started using utensils they no longer wanted to sit in their highchairs, they would literally cry and pitch a fit and throw all of their food onto the floor. The highchair sits too high up (since it sits ontop of reg kitchen table chair) so I wasn't able to push them up to the table. I bought them a little table and chairs and some placemats. They love to sit at their own table and eat their food :) Hope this helps!

We haven't experienced the same high chair problem yet with our DD's. However we have some hook on seats, they connect to the table top and work great! Our girls LOVE them. I haven't found a table yet they don't attach too. We use our high chairs at home but we use them when we go to dinner at a family members house, or at a restaurant. I love not having to dis-infect the high chairs at restaurants! They are also nice you don't have to worry about having enough chairs for everyone. Good Luck!

I moved my twins from the space-saver to a booster at 20 months, and put my baby in a booster at 10 months. She eats right off the table and loves being at the table with everyone without a tray in the way. I didn't think it would work as I loved the trays for the twins, but it works great. My twins wanted to eat in a regular chair on their knees starting about a month ago and are loving being "big kids". That has made eating out so much easier as we can sit in a booth and don't need any high chairs or boosters for them.

I've also learned to put just a few pieces of food in front of my 12-month-old and she throws much less. Now, she'll throw when she's full. My twins stopped throwing food/cups at 22 months, for the most part.
